Office and Funambol on Wine

Post by pcbodger »

Hi all

Long time browser, first time poster :)

I have been trying to migrate my life over to Salix OS (as I love it) for a while but have come unstuck with my email / PIM needs.

I can live with Claws or Thunderbird for email, I just don't fancy OSMO so am short on the PIM front, especially as I need to sync my N700 as well.

I thought about installing Office 2010 and the Funambol (cloud based PIM / phone sync) plugin under Wine.

What I do not know is whether or not the Funambol plugin would install and whether the phone would be detected under Wine.

Any ideas?

Are there any other ways I could get a fully fledged PIM and Nokia phone sync under Salix?

TIA!

I'm using the syncevolution client for my N900 to sync with a funambol server on my desktop pc (there are also public providers but I prefer that solution). For thunderbird there is also a funambol plugin that is currently getting revamped by maurus.net.
That solution works quite well for ONE calendar (the thunderbird plugin doesn't support more than one) and also relatively good for contacts. No idea about todos, I just keep them on my phone.
All in all it is far from perfect but does quite reliably most of what I need. No idea whether such a plugin exists for your phone too. But the great thing is you just need the server and the respective clients on the devices. You've got one central storage and the same data on any device.

As Shador said synchronisation should be done via a server, so all clients will have the same data. I don't know what kind of servers your phone supports, maybe CalDAV and CardDAV or Exchange (=ActiveSync).
For DAV you can use a provider like https://fruux.com/. I think Yahoo supports ActiveSync , but actually I don't know.
On your desktop I suggest to use a PIM solution like Kontact or Evolution, AFAIK the only tools that support a number of protocols.

Then set up ypur desktop client and phone to sync calendar & contacts to the server and it should work.

Hi

Thanks for the replies. I think it is just the same as all current Nokia phones.

I got Funambol working with MS Outlook 32bit on my windows box with the phone running the Symbian Funambol client fine. I would have stuck with that for the time being but I rebuilt my Windows box and installed MS Oulook 64 bit which is not supported by Funambol.

I would use Evolution or Kontact but these are not on the Salox repos.

I tried TB + Lightning + Funambol on Salix but it just keeps crashing.

I can't face learning how to set up a local server (not time) so I shall try Fruux. Edit: Tried Fruux - no go as Caldav for N9 only :( Only thing left to try is Outlook plus Funambol plugin under Wine or swap to Ubuntu to get Evolution which I do not want to do as I love Salix. Grrrr...

kontact is included in the kdepim package. But installing that will probably drag in most of KDE.

:o Thanks but KDE and me have never got on - a matter of taste, I guess.

I some other post that it is possible to install Evolution (presumably by adding another repo or a direct install / compile) but it might hose your system. How likely is that? If I could, this would solve everything as Evolution has Funambol integration built in (at least on the distro I last had).

EDIT: RTFM'd and found this: http://www.salixos.org/wiki/index.php/H ... Salix_13.0 - will back everything up and go for the ride :)

Why would you install such an old version of Gnome? I'm happy on Gnome 3.2 (GSB still works with very good stability with a few tweaks), but if you want a Gnome 2 experience, why not go with Mate instead? Is there no Mate equivalent to Evolution?

Well the issue isn't which version of Gnome (apart from the fact that I don't like the Gnome 3 UI experience), it is having Evolution which has the Funambol plugins I need.

I have no idea if Mate has Evolution but I guess the best way to find out is to burn a DVD and find out :)

Plus, the Gnome install did not work as there were a bunch of errors :(

Yes, obviously it didn't work, because those instructions are for 13,0.

No, MATE doesn't have evolution and you won't find a package in the repositories or in slackbuilds.org either.
