I just noticed that GSlapt uses 80-90% of available CPU cycles when downloading stuff. slapt-get doesn't do that, so I'm just using slapt-get for now.
This is under Salix Mate 13.37... Oddly I've never noticed this issue in any other environment.
GSlapt CPU usage when downloading

(Warning this post is made by a newbie. So I am very well could be very wrong.)
Have you checked memory usage? Mate might be using up more memory than the other environments, plus what ever GSlapt uses might show up as CPU usage if it is writing to swap or something.
