Calibre and Font Display

Post by ElderDryas »

I've been having a very strange problem with Calibre and the font display (inside calibre and the ebook reader).

Steps:
1) Install Salix
2) Change hinting to slight (just to make the display standout)
2) Install Calibre
3) Font display in Calibre is the same as in the rest of Salix
4) Update Salix
5) Font display in Calibre resembles full or medium hinting (but not quite :), not slight.
6) Change hinting from slight to anything not slight and back to slight
7) Font display in calibre now displays correctly (until I reboot)

It first showed itself immediately after an upgrade from calibre .40 -> .41 (this was a two or three months ago), and is absolutely confined to Salix 13.37 (XFCE, I have not installed any other DE), it doesn't not show itself in any other distro I've tried (LM, Fedora(XFCE or GNOME Shell), Ubuntu, Xubuntu, LMDE-XFCE or SolusOS).

I am assuming that it is a Calibre problem (as fonts in the rest of Salix display as set), but I'm hoping someone can give me a hint as to why :)

Thanks, but the situations don't appear to be parallel, the fonts look fine everywhere <except> in calibre.

A I said, I'm pretty sure this is a calibre problem, as it first manifested itself immediatley after a calibre update (.40->.41, iirc), not a Salix update. But there <is> something in the current Salix 1337 updates (after a fresh install) that causes this behavior, because prior to updating Salix, this behavior in <not> evidenced...ever (just as a test I spent a day using the machine before updating).

The part that has me really puzzled is the fact that after I modify the hinting (and back), this problem goes away...until I boot again.
