Just gave up and installed antiX fluxBox from a live cd. It's bootloader is grub and it had noproblems. IDK if all my issues were from Lilo or not but I am sure all the install files for Salix went off w/o a hitch. I will try on another Hdd and skip installing Lilo then use grub just to satisfy my curiosity. It is a relativly low spec machine p3 800mhz & 128Mb ram. It took around 45 mins to decompress Linux so that should have been an indication. I'll try again when I have time.

Thanks again to all who tried to help.

It's unlikely that another distribution will work, but you cannot be sure. That may depend on memory areas that is allocated during installation and other factors. You may end up with another distribution or OS installed, but still not working stable.
At least memtest86 is always recommended on such old hardware.

^^what he said...

A typical Linux distro (including my Salix lxde) uses approximately 100 MB RAM in itself. If you only have 128, anything you do (word processing, internet browsing) will make heavy use of your swap partition. With a slow HDD (and it's probably slow on an old pc) everything will run extremely slow.

256 MB RAM will work, if you're patient. But 128 sounds almost hopeless.
Salix lxde 13.1 on an old Dell Inspiron 1100
FluxFlux 2011 on an eee 900
