Your video card is probably not compatible with the nouveau driver that is being used by default. It will probably work just fine if you install the proprietary nvidia driver.

Thanks gapan,
I believe your right. but the nouveau driver has always worked on this machine before so just thought that someone might have run into the same problem before.
is there any way on the live cd to change the driver and give it a try?

Yes - search the forum (possibly the wiki). You're not the first person to come up against this.

I don't mean to be all "RTFM" - just rushed off my feet these days :)

Maybe someone else can give you specific pointers.

Hi, kc1di,

I have the same Nvidia integrated video that you do, and I ran into the same problem with the Salix 13.37 Live KDE CD. For me, the solution that fixed the garbled screen image was to use the cheatcode

Code: Select all

nouveau.noaccel=1
The forum thread below has some additional details/explanation:

http://salixos.org/forum/viewtopic.php?f=17&t=3291
"Salix Live KDE 13.37." 14 Mar. 2012.

If the Live CD plays well with your other hardware and you decide to install Salix to your HD, it's not difficult to install the proprietary Nvidia driver. (I'm using it with 13.37 LXDE and it works just fine). There are several resources to help guide you through the Nvidia driver installation process:

"Nvidia cards and others." 4 Nov. 2011.
(Instructions from user maximus)

http://broadcast.oreilly.com/2012/04/so ... -with.html
Martin, Caitlyn. "Solving Display Problems With Some NVIDIA Chipsets After Installing Slackware 13.37 or Salix OS 13.37." 5 Apr. 2012.

http://www.salixos.org/wiki/index.php/H ... DIA_driver
"How to Install the proprietary NVIDIA driver.

It has been a while since I installed the driver, but IIRC I used maximus's instructions. (At the time I hadn't stumbled upon Caitlyn's article). If you read these how-to's, I think you'll have your display working nicely in short order.

HTH,

Thanks gaucho,
That cheat code did the trick. now writing this on the live xfce cd in the Nvidia machine. will try it out a little and if all is well will install.
Thanks again.

You're welcome. I'm glad that cheatcode worked for you. (When I read your question, I thought to myself: "Wow! At last something that I can actually answer"). :) Since I've been using Salix, I've run into very few problems -- and those have been minor and easily solved by searching the forum. For the most part, Everything Just Works.

If you haven't installed to HD yet, one piece of advice I'd offer is to prepare your partitions beforehand with Gparted. I don't remember whether the Live CD has Gparted on it by default, or if you'd have to use it from some other tool (such as a Puppy Linux Live CD). I typically use Puppy for this, and it has worked well for me.

Thanks again gaucho,
have not installed yet think i'll give lxde a try first.
I have salix xfce installed on another machine and it's working fine.
I already have my partitioning done though.
XFCE fonts looked terrible on this machine LXDE is much better in that department.
Cheers,
Dave
