That behaviour is normal. I suspect the config file is only generated once everything has been set by the user in the GUI, so till then, there is nothing to edit.

But the same behavior is seen again, after rebooting, after logging in, after launching LiloSetup more than once. So this is not "just for the first run" type of behavior.

I did wonder about NAME=SLACKWARE, though. I think the same happens with Slackel. However, everything worked just the same.

I think this was not present in previous versions. If this is happening in Slackel too, then it might be because of the same common version.

On an unrelated matter... in "salix-xfce-14.0beta1.iso -> salix/settings/" there are files for "13.2" and "13.37" in addition to "14.0". Is this intentional?

No, indeed, it isn't. Each time, you start again. Think about it - the first thing the application does is look for bootable things on the partitions. Unless nothing has changed, the old config file won't correspond to reality any more. So you need to start again.

If you're editing lilo.conf manually, the logic is different, because a human being (who knows what's changed) can take the old config as a starting point. But this script takes whatever it can see on the hard disk as a starting point.

You could add a feature to lilosetup that would allow you to use it as a GUI for manual editing followed by reinstalling the bootloader. But why not just use your favourite editor?

I've noticed the panel behaves oddly sometimes - perhaps after the screensaver has been in operation.

1) Move the mouse over the panel where there appears to be nothing, and a window title appears

2) At the moment, I have a ghost - another instance of Firefox which I think I closed. There was also (briefly) Geany, ditto; but that one's gone.

just finished installing the 32bit version and have a couple minor things that popped up. one is if compositing is enabled transparency seems to get "stuck" on for various windows. two, I tried installing the equinox and murrine theme engines from sourcery but they both fail to build.

Since there is still no hardware requirements general guidelines for Salix, I think at least some mention about PAE should be made.

Processors have some kind of support (or at least compatibility) for SMP since some 486, but the SMP kernel in Salix 14.0 is also requesting PAE (as Slackware does, so no surprise there). So even if you have a processor compatible with SMP, if it doesn't support PAE too then you would need to select the non-SMP kernel.

IMHO (and please don't ask me for hard stats because I don't have them ), SMP is beneficial for most users, but not _that_ many users would take real advantage of a PAE processor even if they would have one.

I don't know why Slackware keeps PAE set on for the SMP kernel, but I'd certainly like to see an option for an SMP kernel without PAE in Salix.

Of course all this is only relevant for the x32 variant.

Because i'm impatient and not very clever is it safe enough to install this beta and then keep upgrading until it becomes stable? If so do I also need to change the repos or are they changed as part of the upgrade process? My apologies for the dumb questions.

I think you're fine on both counts. The repos are already 14.0 (not current any more). But there's still quite a bit of stuff missing. It will arrive in due course!
