Torrent error for Salix Xfce 14.0beta1

Post by jayseye »

Hi, I apologize for cross-posting, but this issue has gone unanswered since 9. Oct 2012, 13:31 under Announcements. A solution might help other potential beta testers as well:

Transmission reports "unregistered torrent pass" as mentioned in this old post: http://salixos.org/forum/viewtopic.php? ... 404&p=2388. Tested the suggestions found in that thread; they fail to help.

Running Salix Fluxbox 13.37 with all patches applied. Normal download speed from SourceForge is poor from my location.

Any ideas to get the torrent working?

Thanks!

Just tested now with transmission and it works, dowload at 1.02 Mo/s.

It is a multi tracker .torrent file (linuxtracker and openbittorrent), so, even if linuxtracker is doing some shit, the openbittorrent tracker works.
I think I will give up linuxtracker for the next time and add another open one.

I've checked my salix seedbox too and seeds are ok.
So, I really don't know what to say.

Thanks for the reply! Have you got a direct link for the torrent at openbittorrent?

I just went to the main page at http://openbittorrent.com/ and they're overloaded. They warn against being banned if you Refresh their front page.

Still get the same error, which I reported above. from the original link. Perhaps that's a location-based issue? I'm in the USA.

I've also tested directly at the linuxtracker website and get a couple of different errors there. Would it help for me to report those details here?

BTW I was trying to get the 32-bit torrent, rather than the 64-bit version. Had to give up after hitting several dead ends in researching the error message.

Finally was able to get a good download from SourceForge, which matched the md5sum posted in the Announcement.

Sorry, I meant to do this earlier. In case anyone has the same problem ...

http://people.salixos.org/mimosa/misc/s ... 82.torrent
http://people.salixos.org/mimosa/misc/s ... 45.torrent

These are internal torrent client files but I think they should work.

Thanks mimosa, tested your torrent long enough to confirm that it works. Currently there's just 1 seeder, so you might consider cross-posting on the Announcement thread, if that's allowed.

It seems not to be, and I'm not sure just posting it on the beta thread would be prominent enough to be useful.

I often find myself inthe same situation as you (indeed I made a request for the torrent to be put up) and I'm sorry I didn't respond to your original query. If you don't do something at once, it can get forgotten; but on the other hand if you do everything immediately, you can't concentrate on anything.

Yes, all good points, and reminiscent of why Time exists at all: to keep everything from happening at once.

A corollary might be that if everyone enters their bug reports on the beta Announcement thread, then all the responses would be well-organized; but that thread could get so large that important posts get lost.

Happily I did get Salix 14 beta 1 installed on an old PC. Runs better than I expected, given the Pentium MMX CPU at 233 MHz, and 256MB RAM. This is very encouraging, especially for a beta. Had tested several flavors of 13.37 on that PC, and was unable to boot any of them.

I do have some quirks / bugs to report for 14 beta, and will give serious thought to the best way(s) to pursue / report them.

Thanks again for putting up the working torrent, mimosa.

I don't know if linuxtracker "needs" to be dropped. The most important thing regarding torrents is to publish the little .torrent file and the MAGNET code immediately at the same time the first announcement is posted (with no delays).

If users start downloading directly from http from SF, then the torrent would probably won't "pick up" as much.

(Moreover, IMO, ONLY the little .torrent links and MAGNET codes should be initially posted, instead of posting the direct http download links, even if the direct downloads are evidently available in SF.net.)

Once the torrent "picks up", it doesn't matter much if one tracker is temporarily down, as long as others are available.

FWIW, here is something that might be worth evaluating for the next torrent (in addition to the current trackers):

Code: Select all
