I plain to install salix 14 but i want to be able to connect my mobile broadband device easily so that i can surf the internet like i do in ubuntu? Wicd don´t support mobile networks... how can i change that?

Easy! (Salix OS 14.0 beta1):
1. Install from GSlapt: Network-manager-applet, ModemManager and Usb_modeswitch.
2. Remove Wicd.
3. Main Menu -> System -> System services (gtkservicesetup) -> set a tick on "networkmanager" and remove on "wicd" -> button "OK".
4. Reboot the computer.

It was nice that Salix 14.0 have this packages installed by default instead of Wicd:
- Network-manager and Network-manager-applet
- ModemManager
- Usb_modeswitch

Does Wicd support PPP, PPPoE, or Mobile Broadband?
Not yet. Support for these are planned for wicd 2.0, which will be released in the late future.

Wicd is very good for almost everything else, and I suspect it's easier to use than the tools mentioned above.

I suggest as an interim solution making those tools available by default (or would they conflict with Wicd?) and in any case, documentation in the Wiki, as prominently signposted as possible. This thread should provide the material for writing such a wiki page. I'd do so myself, but it needs to be someone who uses one of these to check the steps described are correct.

If anyone has time, a GUI tool (a bit like Install multimedia codecs) to fix this from the System menu would be a nice feature. Maybe when I finish my Python book I'll try and write it myself!

I see two points to consider here:

1) Wicd doesn't work for some users (3G) and NetworkManager does. Is there any group of users for whom the converse is true?

2) For cases where both work (the large majority), are there significant differences in performance? If NetworkManager sucks, that would count against it even if it helped 3G users (who, after all, can just install it).

I've swapped to NetworkManager in the beta to try and get a feeling for the second question, but it's hard to say much. Most of the time it just works, but so does Wicd. I'd say Wicd's user interface is better designed, but that's no big deal. Also, Wicd has wicd-curses for console use - does NetworkManager have anything similar?

I often do have a very bad morning or afternoon with my wireless, and I've always attributed this to the ISP or the router. Maybe it will happen less now; but as I said, it's hard to get a firm impression.

i don't have wired or wireless network and sakis 3g don't work (i don't know why because i cant turn on the device and make everything conected but the webpage don't load)!! so i have to stick with networkmanager...
