Just installed Salix 14 xfce this morning. It must be the smoothest linux install i've experienced. Started with Ubuntu in 2007, switched to xubuntu in 2010 and have seen the distro go downhill (like included a buggy development version of Abiword and loads of other bugs). I've been searching for another distro; i did try Zenwalk but had problems with the install which could have been my machine or me! I wanted to try Slack (or derivative) but wanted one that was user friendly given that i'm not a computer geek although i've learnt a fair bit. So i chose Salix instead of Vector and so far not disappointed.
I'm aware of the risk (and Slack reputation)
"Go Slack and you'll never look back"
Yes, you are in the right place.
Salix is Slackware made easy with no trade offs in performance.
I have my Salix 13.1 installed for 2.5 years and runs solid.
We do have a Vector install on my wife's Laptop which is a good install.
However we both agree the Salix is the better of the two..
Getting ready to install Xfce 14 myself and was happy to hear your report on 14 and your satisfaction.
