[SOLVED In a Way] Printer Problem

Post by Atip »

In Salix Xfce-14 my Epson LQ300 24 pin printer does not function properly.

When a file is printed the printer hangs and, therefore, does not advance
to a new page. To print a new file I have to switch-off the printer and
manually advance to a new page and switch it on again.

The same problem I have in Slackel-OpenBox, however, not in Salix Fluxbox 13.37
with kernel 3.3.6-smp.

So if I have to do serious printing I have to go back to my Salix Fluxbox box.

Ideas appreciated.

Thanks! This driver does not work s well. :(

Changed to kernel-3.3.6-smp from Salix-Fluxbox. Did not help either.

To repeat no such problem in Salix-Fluxbox-13.37 nor before that in VL6 and before that in .......
that my Epson LQ300 printer hangs after having finished printing a file and does not advance to
next page.

I will install another distro and see what happens with my printer.

Why do you think that it is the kernel, rather than (for example) the cups version?

When changing kernels, did you also switch to the matching kernel modules? Please forgive me if this is obvious; just felt inspired to ask.

Yes, I will check the cups version. Had it in mind already.

Surely it's SOP to switch as well to the matching module.
Sometimes when in a hurry one can forget.

I as well copied /etc/cups from my Fluxbox13.37 to XFCE14, same, no dice.

Thanks all!

Removed cups-1.5.4, installed cups-1.4.6 and my good old Epson 300 is back working
properly, if printing of a file is finished printer advances to next page. :D :D

This holds for Salix-Xfce-14 as well as for Slackel-OpenBox

Who might want to know this problem with the new cups version and may be address it?

I see cups has a bug report page. Trying to open says insecure.

Further there is now a cups-1.6.1 version. Could that be made available in Salix or Slackel so I could check if the bug with Epson LQ300 was addressed?

Somebody was kind enough to provide me with a cups-1.6.1*.txz file. I installed it and could
not print neither with the Epson nor with the Brother printer. For both the error message
was that the filters are missing, yet the filters for both are in place at /usr/lib/cups/filters.

I removedpkg cups-1.6.1 and reinstalled cups-1.4.6 and got into a real mess with all kind of
errors like:
'client-error-document-format-not-supported' that's a plain text
or
Unsupported format 'application/vnd.cups-banner'

Doing a lot of searching yielded mostly companies trying to sell me things.

After working on the problem for 2 full mornings I have finally may printers back with
cups-1.4.5.

Sigh!

I booted into KNOPPIX-7.0.4 which has printer version of cups-1.5.4(3) and my Epson LQ-300
printer is printing properly, that is after printing a file it advances to the next page and does not hang.

So we have:

cups-1.5.4 prints correctly in Salix-Fluxbox-13.37 and in KNOPPIX, however, not
in Salix-14-Xfce4 and in Slackel-OpenBox.

Big question: W H Y

From Cups Forum I get that the driver for Epson LQ-300 had not been changed.

This Epson printer is connected to a USB port via an adapter cable.
