I have tried the live CD for KDE and Xfce of Salix and neither will boot.
I tried on two PCs, on the first after selecting the keyboard setup the screen froze, on the other after setting up the USB I got Fatal Error cannot continue message.
The KDE I used bittorent to download and the Xfce I downloaded straight.
I have installed Slackware 13 and 14 on the first PC without problems.
Is there anything I can try to get it working?
Cannot Boot KDE or Xfce
Re: Cannot Boot KDE or Xfce
Hmmm.. Same Media.. 2 PCs... same results..
And it will probably be the same on 32 PCs ..
My bet would be Bad Media.. Either the CD/DVD is Defective OR the Burns are Bad...
Less likely is that he ISO package is corrupt but could be did you check Checksum.
I would Download the ISO Again and Reburn at a 4x speed with Verify On..
Better Luck

Hi, silverbird,
Welcome to the Salix OS Forum. I'm assuming that the Live KDE you're trying is Salix 13.37, correct? I ran into trouble with that Live CD on my desktop PC, but was able to install it on my little netbook (where it's still running great). Apparently there are certain combinations of hardware & BIOS which are problematic for that Live KDE CD. (Do you perhaps have an Nvidia card?)
If you read through the thread below (which includes some links to screenshots), you can see if the glitches described there match what you're experiencing:
http://salixos.org/forum/viewtopic.php?f=17&t=3291
"Salix Live KDE 13.37." 14 Mar. 2012.
If you can successfully boot the Live CD, you could try using its Live Clone feature to make a Live USB thumbdrive, and install from there. If you checked your md5sum, have confidence in your media, are sure you have a good burn and still can't get the CD to boot, please post back with additional details. The Salix developers regularly read the forum and I bet one of them can help you.
HTH and Good luck,

Re: Cannot Boot KDE or Xfce
I can't imagine it is a corrupt CD/DVD as there are two separate downloads producing exactly the same result (burnt at 2x speed), but I have not done a checksum. They would both have to be corrupt in the same way.
I did download the install version and managed to get an installation of sorts (though lilo would not install. I could then boot from the CD and by typing
hugesmp.s root=/dev/sda1 rdinit= ro I get the desktop.
While trying to find out how to install a loader (again this step worked for Slackware) the desktop stopped being able to see the internet. I stopped at this point.
Oddly Slackware 13 installed lilo to sda1 ok, but 14 would not. I did get it to install manually but not for Salix. I was trying to get grub installed when I lost internet connection.
I will try the solution mentioned in the link (i.e. not choosing the US keyboard to proceed) with the live CDs I have.

Re: Cannot Boot KDE or Xfce
Which Salix versions are these? If Slackware 13 1nd 14 both installed with no problems, I'm guessing 13.37. This could mean the kernel used in 13.37 doesn't support your hardware (in the case where the behaviour is different with Live, the hardware in question would have to be the device you are booting from).
However it's unusual for such a problem to be fixed between two kernels and then reappear with a third, still later one.
As an experiment, you might like to try Slackel (www.slackel.org) which offers Openbox and KDE desktops. The latter is also available as live (scroll down quite a way to find it).
It would also be interesting to try Salix XFCE 14 (if I'm right to assume you were using 13.37). If Slackware 14 works and Salix 14 doesn't, that suggests it's not a problem with kernel hardware support at all. On the forum, you will also find a link to Salix 14 KDE beta (or even RC), which is very close to its final state and would provide a good system.

Re: Cannot Boot KDE or Xfce
hi everyone
i just want to share a little experience about booting slackware 14 and also salix os xfce 14
after a fresh install , when i reboot the system , it stuck on this message
i tired another and the system finish booting but stucking in dark black screen , so i have again to recreate xorg.conf file because i had one named xorg.conf-versa . then verything was ok .
so saying that everything can work out of the box , i'm not sure about that .
maybe it's just me

so i tired too many times , unpluging all cables ; but no joy . i knew it's something about nvidia card nouveau ( i have a gt 520 ) . so i use a live cd , then i create a file ( nouveau.conf ) on modprobe.d directory . i wrote on it ( blacklist nouveau ) .May 5 18:13:46 darkstar kernel: [ 5.279832] [drm] nouveau 0000:01:00.0: Detected 2048MiB VRAM

The Linux philosophy is 'Laugh in the face of danger'. Oops. Wrong One. 'Do it yourself'. Yes, that's it.
Re: Cannot Boot KDE or Xfce
These cards give a lot of people trouble, not just in Salix either. There are some good suggestions you can find by searching this forum and also I believe the wiki, though what works in one case may not work in another.
