Help with Salix Mate

Post by jmdlcar »

Hi all,

I have a question I put Salix Mate on 2 4gb thumb disk. On the first 4gb I put the 64 bit version it boot up then I got a lot of lines going across the screen but it had mouse control I had to shut my computer down the power button. On the second 4gb I put the 32 bit version it seem to boot up when done I got a black screen with no mouse control so I power down the same way as the first.

I hate to say this but I been using LUbuntu 13.04 64 bit version with no problems. The only thing I can say I like how Slackware work and easy to setup the only thing it didn't have printer support that about 6 years ago. When I found out that Salix had printer support I will give it a try but I can't get to boot up. I want to use it as live version and not a full install.

I like to show other how better Linux is then the memory hog called MS Window and I tell them Linux is FREE so far I got about 20 people to convert to Linux using LUbuntu and hope to get more with Salix.

So if anyone can give me help to fix it that would be great. I could try a cd live version but don't want waste a cd if it don't work.

I'm on a fix income beside I don't have any cd right now.

Thanks
Jack

I'm sorry, but you're not making much sense. You keep babling on, but you're not providing any actual information.

How? What Salix Mate? Do you mean a live image? What version? What iso? And again: how did you put it in the thumb drive?

So, you had to shut down the computer because it had mouse support? Right.

If it was a blank screen how do you know there was no mouse control?

Why do you hate to say this?

Slackware doesn't have printer support? What are you talking about?

OK.

OK.

So what is that Salix Mate you're talking about if not a live CD version?

Hi,

Yes it is the live version. I could have said it won't boot up and it don't work. I try to give as much info as possible. I try to tell anyone that could help me.

Here the files I was trying "MATE Live Disc Images (i486, 32-bit) and MATE Live Disc Images (x86_64, 64-bit)" and yes they didn't work on my 4gb thumb disk and yes I have 2 of them and they both work.

I been with Slackware from 2000 to 2005 with full install with no print support. Then I use Suse, Red hat now Fedora and Ubuntu tell they went to gnome 3 and yes they were full install with print support which was from 2005 2011. Then went to the live version LUbuntu from 2011 to now. Then you said yes on print support I was happy to be back with Slackware base. Then Salix Mate is gnome base which is great for me. So I'm not new with Linux

Don't worry about anything I will stay with the USB live version of LUbuntu 13.04 it work the first time I put it on a 2gb thumb disk to see if it would work or not but now I put it on 64gb thumb disk which it works great. There 2 partitions 4gb and 60gb. 4gb is where I put LUbuntu and the 60gb is where I put my musics, pictures and files. I'm just glad I didn't try to install Salix Mate on it and lose everything I had on it.

Have a good day
Jack

EDIT: I use UNetbootin to install it on the USB thumb disk. And I did say the live version read my message again if you need too.

Don't use Unetbootin for Salix Live (though I believe it does work for the Install image). Use the script install-on-usb.sh. You may need to make it executable first. Instructions on the wiki:

http://www.salixos.org/wiki/index.php/H ... an_USB_key

Looking at these instructions, it seems that recent versions of Unetbootin do work; but if it didn't work for you, try using the script.

Hi,

I added some more stuff to my last message.

I can't run those scripts from MS Windows 7 64 bit and I don't have any cd right now to make a bootable cd.

Beside i 'm on a fix income and I had poison ivy for 2 weeks and still have some. I went to the hospital and they said they never seen it that bad.

Thanks

From Windows, there is a different script: install-on-usb.cmd; I'm not sure of the details, but you may find some information in the Salix Startup Guide (linked from the main page). Alternatively, try unetbootin again, checking the right version and any other instructions. Or use any Live Linux at all.

I'm sorry to hear about your brush with the poison ivy.

Hi,

I just downloaded unetbootin the same day I downloaded Salix Mate 13.37 32 & 64 bit. There is a file call "PXE initrd" where do I need to put it? I'm going to use a cd if I can use it to install Salix on a USB. If it don't work then I will use LUbuntu 13.04 I don't want too but I will have no choice.

About my poison ivy I'm 65 and I have never had it but I seen on the internet that people that never had it is getting this year cause it been bad this for everyone.

Thanks

You don't need a CD to install Salix Live on USB. However, if you have one and you still have trouble with the USB, maybe that would be easier: burn the image you've downloaded to CD, and boot from that. Then you can use LiveCLone from the CD to make a bootable USB. Be aware that it may take a very long time to complete, depending on your hardware - up to several hours during which it will communicate very little about its progress.

Hi,

I try another smaller thumb disk and I use unetbootin again with no luck. I would try pendrivelinux but Salix is not on the list. Pendrivelinux works great on most Linux.

For now I'm going to give up on Salix Mate. Sorry I could not get it to work. Slackware is faster then most Linux. I did try Slax and it works great and it fast but I don't care for KDE as a desktop maybe cause it look like MS Windows 7. I have to use it at work and my wife use ours at home. That why I use a live version of Linux at home when I'm done I unplug thumb disk and reboot.

I will check in every 2 or 3 days. I ask about a printer and no one must know for sure.

Thanks All
Jack
