Hi guys, after a couple of years away I'm back to Salix. Very impressed with the XFCE version, it's as beautiful as I remember and even faster than before. After I got a new laptop, I distro hopped for awhile and eventually wound up on Mint's Debian edition. Not sure why, now. Debian is a great system, but compared to Slackware it's a bit - I don't know, not bloated, but heavy. Twice the packages for one thing, even without Mint's additional layering. I was impressed with the speed, but it lacked the snap Salix gives me.
Anyway Mint's Debian XFCE version is no more, and so I spent some time checking other distros (Fedora, OpenSuse, Debian Wheezy, Debian Testing) and finally settled back on Salix. Best combination of speed and features and absolutely stable on my HP G62. Thanks for another great OS.
hello again

Re: hello again
Welcome back.
Not to try and drive you away, but if you liked Linux Mint's LMDE-XFCE, you might take a look at SolydXK (the X=XFCE and the K=KDE). It's basically the same as LMDE (Debian Testing with a semi-rolling release), the dev was the "unofficial" LMDE-KDE maintainer until he split off to do his own thing.
All that said, I really still prefer Salix, but I think SolydX would be my go to distro if something happened to Salix.

Re: hello again
Hi, Elder. Yes, I did look at read up on SolydXK and thought seriously about moving there. But I was ready for a real change, not just a lateral move. I was more interested in OpenSuse and Fedora, both systems I had never used before, but Fedora's cutting-edge nataure was a turn off and OpenSuse just didn't 'feel' right. Arch ( or Manjaro or ArchBang ) was also on the list, but once I put Salix on it was like coming home.

And that is exactly why, everytime I stray for a while, I keep coming back to Salix, it just <feels> right.madmarv wrote:... but once I put Salix on it was like coming home.
Re: hello again
Had a similar experience. Used Salix xfce a few years ago and liked it. Then I did something goofey (seem to have the knack) and hosed the system. Bounced around for awhile and ended back with Salix xfce on the main desktop. Sometimes I get the itch to try something else and then sanity hits - why??? I have no good answer says I. Stable, preditable, works - leave it alone - so far that's what I've able to do.
The new notebook is running Solydx and its been OK. The wife's laptop just got changed from MInt DE to SolydK (first time with KDE) main reason being I figured it would be somewhat easier (time was short) and there are some KDE games she needs or she get cranky. Not in love with KDE but its pretty. I cut my Linux teeth with Debian (mostly Mint) so I tend to migrate that way at times. I'm done - Bye bye

Welcome Back @madmarv ..
Let me share my Distrohopping also..
Using Linux as my primary OS since about 1995. I have installed and liked many Distros.
However during the past years I have continued to have 3 Distros on my Laptops without interuption.
Debian since 2000, Sabayon since 2006, Salix since 2010. While probably installing and uninstalling 50 other distros on spare partitions. If Sabayon or Salix ever went away then I know I would default to the bases of Gentoo and Slackware.
...Yes, I am a Lazy Slacker
As you three have come and gone and back again, I am going to have to eye on you boys..
What did you miss ??? Probably you were not here when gapan was giving out the free Automobiles

I don't mind missing out on the free autos, what I regret missing was when gapan was handing out the free RAID Arrayssqlpython wrote:What did you miss ??? Probably you were not here when gapan was giving out the free Automobiles
