Hi, fizzy-logic,

You have help from some folks more knowledgeable than I am, fortunately. But I'll throw out a few more suggestions/links that might be worth trying. :)

Have you also tried typing Ctrl-Alt-F1 to bring up a virtual terminal?

Have you tried appending "nouveau.noaccel=1" to the boot line in GRUB2?

Here are some alternative instructions for installing a proprietary Nvidia driver:

http://broadcast.oreilly.com/2012/04/so ... -with.html
Martin, Caitlyn. "Solving Display Problems With Some NVIDIA Chipsets After Installing Slackware 13.37 or Salix OS 13.37." 5 Apr. 2012.

As a method of getting the proprietary Nvidia driver in your /home directory, you could download the driver to a working system and save/transfer it to a USB flash drive -- it's probably 40-50 MB in size. Then you could use a minimal Live CD (such as Puppy Linux) to graphically copy the driver over to Salix's /home partition, and follow the procedures above.

HTH and Good Luck.

Really great suggestions here.
Have you also tried typing Ctrl-Alt-F1 to bring up a virtual terminal? Yes...No go!

Have you tried appending "nouveau.noaccel=1" to the boot line in GRUB2? Now this may prove very helpful, it seems that it (nouveau.noaccel=1) needs to be placed somewhere specifically in the boot code. Do you know where ?
I'll follow the links anf their suggestions and hope to be working from salix soon.

Hi,
Although there might be slight variations in GRUB2's implementation from distro to distro, my guess is that adding a kernel temporary boot parameter would be done in a standard way. I found two links which will hopefully point you in the right direction:

[ Fedora ]:

"Fedora won't boot after installing Nvidia drivers."

[Scroll towards the bottom of the page and look for the series of GRUB screenshots]

[ Ubuntu (and its derivatives) ]:

well finally got to that pretty login page by ammending the grub boot : nouveau.noaccel=1 at the end of the boot line. Ahhh. Now the login won't accept my username + password.
PS I tried one & no password, too. no luck

Congratulations, that's definitely progress ... which is good. :) I've been thinking about this some; IIRC, the Salix ncurses installation routine sets up the username / password as one of the final steps of the process, and it requires you to type everything twice to confirm your choice(s). I don't believe the installer would finish if you had made a mistake at this stage. Therefore, it's logical to assume that you input this information correctly during the installation, and that you're making some sort of mistake in your current login attempt(s) ...

Are you sure that you're typing your username and password correctly? (Before you do a complete reinstallation, I recommend trying again ... and typing slowly, even using the two-finger "hunt and peck" technique, if necessary).

Might you have your Caps Lock key on? What about the Num Lock key?

Are you remembering the correct (most recent) username and password? (You've had to reinstall more than once, so perhaps you're using a previous username / password combination).

Based on recent experience with my motherboard's integrated Nvidia GPU, I'll also offer a friendly suggestion to carefully check which Nvidia driver you need to download:

http://www.nvidia.com/Download/index.aspx?lang=en-us
Nvidia Driver Downloads

----------

If you have a GeForce 6 and 7 (6xxx/7xxx series) card, please read this carefully:

http://www.nvidia.com/object/IO_32667.html
"What's a legacy driver?"

In March 2013, Nvidia dropped support for older (GeForce 6 & 7) cards from the "nvidia-current" driver and moved it to a new "legacy" 304 driver.

http://nvidia.custhelp.com/app/answers/detail/a_id/3142
"Linux driver 304.* and legacy branch support timeframes."

HTH.

Well thought we'd take a day off to relax.
Now I did go through the checklist as advised gaucho, so I'm leaning toward doing a reinstall. Best I can figure is a typo error.
So when I do and need any more good input I know where to go. I very much like slackware based distros and I used salix about 4 years ago and loved it. Thanks to all for your time and input.

Well oh well reinstalled salix and that apparently solved the login issues.
So I do have a desktop...BUT...my network connection through wireless not working. The driver needed is the RTL8192cu. I see it's included, so how can it get configured. :?:

Please post more detail about what you've tried and what happened. In particular, what happens when you use wicd? It should just work :)

An undersight on my part. Thanks for your concern, though. Forgot to add the ESSID, since it's hidden. Am connected and posting from SALIX.

I would really like to have a nice bottle of French Wine to celebrate. Maybe a D'Anjou Rose ?? Then again one would be too many for me !
