Shutdown hindered, Salix64 Xfce 14.1

Post by westms »

Hello.

For several weeks now, sometimes I can not perform a shutdown via the logout menu in the panel (the door with the red arrow).

When I click the "shutdown" button inside the logout menu, nothing happens. Repeated clicking brings up a message box, whose error message is as follows:

Code: Select all

Fehler

Aktion >>Abmelden...<<
konnte nicht ausgeführt
werden.

Die Sitzungsverwaltung muss
unbeschäftigt sein, wenn heruntergefahren
werden soll

Schließen
The relevant English text is probably:
"Session manager must be in idle state when requesting a shutdown".

At this point, there are no more hand-launched running applications.

After that, the system seems to work largely. Applications can be started and run. But I do not get an Xfce terminal anymore, but still the window frame. I can reach a tty terminal and login and so perform the shutdown.

This Salix system was installed on 22th April. The problem appears now suddenly.

Has anyone else this problem?

That's weird. Are you sure it isn't anything that you tweaked?

I'm absolutely sure. I have not changed anything since it was installed in April.
The problem seems to exists or have exist on other distributions too, for some time.

When searching the web I found some same and some similar messages in forums. First to Mint and (X)Ubuntu, then to Slackware 13.1 also. Last message I read, was from the year 2012.

Some people had found out that they had to wait 60 seconds, then the shutdown went on. Other waited 10 mintues and it went on. Others and I also, have no success with waiting.

I have occasionally experienced hanging on shutdown with one version or another of Salix. As far as I can remember, it occurs right at the end of the process. Generally, I am shutting down in runlevel three.

Thanks for your answer, mimosa. That gives me the feeling of not being alone.

For me, Salix version 14.1 makes more problems than the version 14.0(.1). And more than the versions 13.0 and 13.37.

With Salix I had that now for the first time. But in the past with Suse and Ubuntu, I had a similar problem before. On Ubuntu, the problem was really vicious. The problem occurred frequently, with increasing tendency. Finally every day. The shutdown was stuck, always just before sync and umount. I could no longer reach a console and had to switch off. This resulted in loss of data from the desktop configuration. The icons on the desktop were no longer displayed. Likewise, the panel was not shown.

With Salix the problem is not nearly so (as?) bad now. Until now I had it three times in two or three weeks.

This is not an easy playground. How could one find the error?

I have another problem with shutdown. This second problem let the shutdown proceed to completion, but data is lost.

I suspect that the shutdown process is running too fast or the swapper works incorrectly with this problem. This second problem occurred for the first time with Salix version 14.0 (I think), as the swap strategy was changed. I can not believe that these two problems have something in common.
Maybe I should try a detailed error description once.
