No Wired network connection

Post by excollier »

I installed Salix Openbox to an old laptop (2001 Compaq 2138EA) which has no wireless card, just a wired nic.
I cannot connect to my lan or get an IP address with dhcp. Other versions of Linux (Watt OS, Mint 13, PCLOS) have no such problems, but are a tad on the heavy side for this old computer (640 MB ram, 20GB HDD). I am currently running Watt OS Openbox, but would like to run Salix Openbox as it seems a bit lighter and doesn't seem to thrash it as much as the others.
I tried everything with WICD but although the link lights on the router are busy flashing away, so it is driving the nic ok, it ultimately fails to make a connection. Eth0 is listed in WICD as a connection.
I am currently running Salix Openbox as a VM on my main computer, which connects to the internet straight away (although I can't get any sound on the VM) and I am impressed by it's lightness and speed coupled with simplicity (no great frills).
Any help appreciated. Forgive my ignorance, I am coming from Debian based os for the first time, so things are a little different.

Try changing it (in Wicd Preferences) to eth1. Probably a long shot - if that fails, Sherlock Holmes will walk through the problem systematically.

Post the output of ifconfig. In a terminal do the following

Code: Select all

[~]$ ifconfig
Then copy and past what gets printed out to here

Google translate I'm guessing, but this really doesn't make much sense, unfortunately.

Excuse me for the intelligibility, Google translates so miserably!

I AM TOTALLY NEW HERE. Slackware/Salix14.1 xfce.
Installed as a sharp system. Lightning-fast.
World champion system, i love her.
USB modem HuaweiE3276 connected, the Sakis 3G recognizes and manages the device. But after all easier starting, more time consuming operation necessary to reinstall the MODEM. USB installing 9-10 unnecessary operations all connect. How can I save the MODEM setting, so these non-necessary steps can be avoided?
Ubuntu, Mint, Debian, Antix OS -Network Manager plain the modem connected, only one times it is the configured setting manual on automatically saved. Where could i tweak the system to correct this? Any information will be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.
I hope so, that Google distorting devoid managed to scribble understandably.
