wm-logout or :Quit end into nirwana

Post by jsfarinet »

I was used to used to use (in former times and other distros) "Exec :Quit" in the keys file to leave fluxbox. Now, that still does have an effect but it brings me into a nirwana: a black screen without anything, no console, nothing but the computer still running.

I see in Salix there is this nice tool 'wm-logout' (very confortable!!!) but using the logout button in it has exactly the same result as above.

What's going wrong here (i checked in the terminal but i see no help or options or settings for wm-logout)?

PS. I checked and the consoles (ALT-CTRL-F1 thru F6 and F7 )work as expected.

The problem is most probably slim, which you have replaced gdm with, if I remember correctly...

No! :P

Since you're advice i went back to gdm ... (found a nice enough black and even slackware specific background ;-) ). And its happening here, with gdm as display/login manager . . . (?)

PS. I realized that wm-logout is a nice tool which gives suspend/hibernate access also to the user (not only root) :D
PS2. I presume CTRL-ALT-Delete does not the same as logout (?). Otherwise one could try to play around using xdotool ...

I tried a bit more around that problem:

1. I installed lxdm as well, but the problem is still there.
2. Alt-Ctrl-Del brings the same result i.e. nirwana

Since i remembered that with slim the "Switch-User" did not work and not even wm-logout > logout, but Alt-Ctrl-Del brought to the login

3. i reactivated slim and tried that. But nothing, same as with the other two.

Now, since slim comes up a bit later than gdm, at least appears to me, i see there something loading i did not see before and that's something glx related which, so my idea, is connected to the installation of the fglrx (amd catalyst) driver. Might it be, sorry for my humble mind, that the session shutdown is unable to completely shutdown that and therefore it is unable to reach the console or any login?

How about in xterm

Code: Select all

sudo /sbin/halt
Actually in my fluxbox menu I have
Exit>Shutdown
which reads

Code: Select all

[exec] (Shutdown) {xterm -e sudo /sbin/halt}

The terminal commands work. But i would like to have a correct logout from the graphical desktop to the console.

But there seems to be something broken:

The consoles do not work like i expect: Ctrl+Alt+F1 brings to a console where are displayed the last actions of firefox (given i execute the command from within FF). But it should prompt me with darkstar login, i'd say. Since there is a blinking cursor i tried to login as user. Username is accepted, i'm asked for the password, pswd is accepted to. Doing startx does not work. I have to kill fluxbox manually before, the i reget the login manager window (whatsoever loginmanager i use).

Ctrl-Alt-F2 (and F3) work correctly.
Ctrl-Alt-F4 curiously brings back in the desktop window (i was used to have Ctrl-Alt-F7 before) (??)
Ctrl-Alt-F5 (- F7) bring to a dead window with only a blinking cursor.

(Moreover now, after installing catalyst, the resolution of the console is really ugly (640x480). Is there a way to change that, eventually configuring lilo?).

I post here the content of Xorg.0.log.old, may be someone of you knowledged gurus is able to see something:

Try adding "nomodeset" in the append line of lilo.conf (and run lilo). Reboot after that.

I am not using the new version of Salix-fluxbox since its "mc' file manager
is somehow defective. However, from that now abandoned install I took
wm-logout into my working box wich is Salix-14.1-Xfce4 with Fluxbox installed.
Somehow I noticed that my box does not behave properly after that and using
it especially when using Suspend. Discarded wm-config and all normal again.
"Vogel friss oder stirb" my philosophy. (It's sink or swim)

Nothing changed. Neither in the display nor regard the logout problems.

For sure, my problems are related in some way - to me not understandable, i'm not enough skilled :-( - with the installation of the fglrx (amd catalyst) video driver. I need that desparately OTOH, because otherwise my laptop is constantely overheating und shutting itself down because of overheating.

Before, with the default radeon driver all worked well. Ok, using slim as display manager made wm-logout partially unusable but even with slim i could close a fluxbox session - *CORRECTELY* - using Ctrl-Alt-Del.

May be it would be an idea to look for, where Ctrl-Alt-Del ends now, and how it could be re-established to its default behaviour (from there on i could try to do a little script based on xdotools ... ). Would be a valid starting point.
