If AUTOINSTALL does not appear at all in the install menu, the only thing I can think of is that somehow the burn got corrupted, not enough to make the media not boot, but just enough so that it doesn't work properly. What I would do at this stage is to 1) re-download the iso, 2) MD5SUM to make sure the iso is good, 3) Burn the new iso to $MEDIA, 4) Try to re-install from from new $MEDIA (If it doesn't stop the install process prior to writing the new partitions and report back here).
It's been a while, but does Salix (on a USB) have the option to test the new media in the initial menu, prior to install (can't remember)? If not, it might be a nice idea to add it (if it's not that much trouble for those actually doing the work. I wouldn't want to start another Make A Live CD troubles all over again
