I completely missed your question.

You're right. With activated LILO bitmap as bitmap = /boot/salix.bmp you see no prompt, only a scroll bar menu.
However, if no bitmap screen is displayed, then a text graphic menu and a prompt is visible.

If you're using proprietary video drivers, then I think you may need to reinstall them.

Fortunately, i had in ~/Downloads the catalyst package and could install it locally. In case that i'd would have needed to download it (from the commandline) 2 additional questions:

1. is wicd loaded before X is starting (so I'd have a working internet connection via wlan router even on the commandline)?
2. is elinks working from console (or should i use lynx)?

(That's just to learn something ).

I have exactly zero experience with ATI cards so I don't really know what that commands does and how it is different from reinstalling the driver.

I think it is very uncommon for a xorg update to require reinstalling the proprietary driver though... Not sure why it was the case this time.

Wicd the GUI, no. Wicd the service, yes. So you do get a working network even without X loaded. There is even wicd-curses, so you can manage your connections from a console too.

I don't know, I don't think I have tried it. I like w3m for a console browser.
