Yes, you can download the packages in another PC, transfer them with a usb drive and install with spkg. You'll need the following packages:
* ModemManager
* NetworkManager
* network-manager-applet

You probably have everything else needed already installed.
Remove wicd before installing them, install the packages, make sure the NetworkManager service is enabled and reboot.

Well,

I did as you suggested and network connections is in the startup section.
However, it does not come up.
If I start it from the menu it comes up but I cannot select or change anything.

Is the a problem with user rights? How to get around?

Thanks.

Did you enable the service as I told you to?

It is in the list of services that will be started automatically.
(session and startup in the settings menu).

If I start it from the command line with

Code: Select all

sudo NetworkManager
it comes up but there is no connection...

No, that's not the services. You will find those in the system menu.

Gapan,

I think we are talking about the same, using just different expressions.

However, as the problem was so persistent I was going to check hardware and BIOS...
what should I say, LAN was disabled in the BIOS... :?: :?: :?: :o :shock: :oops:

I don't understand this, as I was using that port before moving the PC and setting up the cable connection. :? :o :?:
(I have 2 different NICs...)

Or I am getting really old and demented/senile... :?: :cry: :mrgreen:

So thanks to you and the rest for looking into and your help!

(I am writng this post from that machine)

NetworkManager says "IPv6: Ignored" which supports your concern!

Anyway, again Thanks and sorry.
Regards Gruß
