Telephone

Post by ron_uit_best »

Hi,

I have installed the latest full install 64bit Salix, upgraded everything. But now I want to use my phone as a storage device. It used to work in the past in Zenwalk, so it should work in Salix. But it does not automatically work.
I can however see the following when I plug it in and see what changes in the /dev directory:
I plugged it in at 21:01 and used grep to see the changes, unfortunately, I see no new block device that I can try to mount

Code: Select all

ron[dev]$ ls -lat | grep 21:01
crw-rw-rw- 1 root tty 5, 2 2010-03-12 21:01 ptmx
drwxr-xr-x 14 root root 15080 2010-03-12 21:01 .
drwxr-xr-x 6 root root 140 2010-03-12 21:01 .udev
drwxr-xr-x 2 root root 14020 2010-03-12 21:01 char
crw-rw---- 1 root root 189, 387 2010-03-12 21:01 usbdev4.4
crw-rw---- 1 root root 248, 22 2010-03-12 21:01 usbdev4.4_ep00
crw-rw---- 1 root root 248, 21 2010-03-12 21:01 usbdev4.4_ep05
crw-rw---- 1 root root 248, 20 2010-03-12 21:01 usbdev4.4_ep84
Anyone that can help?
The phone is a Samsung UGH-U900 and it has a 4GB micro SD card plugged in, and this contains some music that I was able to upload in the past (using Zenwalk)

I have bad experiences connecting phones to my computer, I have a nokia 5200 with a USB cable, every time I connect it it mounts ok, but if I try to browse the contents of the memory it freezes thunar and then the whole computer freeze :(

on the other hand I recommend you to use microSD to SD or microSD to USB adapters, as those don't cause trouble at all, and are easily mounted

Could you post the output of /var/log/messages when you plug in the phone? And could you set the USB operating mode in the phone? It has to be mass storage, not MTP.

Maybe you need to load an extra module for it to work. My laptop card reader won't work unless I load the pciehp module.

Hi,

No replies since last time, too bad. But my contract is ending in June. So I am thinking about a new phone, but I would like one that acts as a mass-storage device. Those are easy to copy files to. But I want a smartphone.
Is a Blackberry or a HTC an option? Can I use them with salix?

It's not important which manufacturer you'll chose. More important is the used OS on the smartphone. My next phone for sure will be Android or Maemo based. While there are plenty manufacturers that sell Android phones (HTC, Motorola, ...) there is only the Nokia N900 with Maemo.
I have no idea about WebOS or Windows Mobile.

I think the best suggestion has already been provided by Duncan_Idaho: use an SD adapter and a USB card reader, they are generally very cheap to get and they always work.

Just for info, I have a T-mobile G1, Android based (not pushing the phone or company but for ID purpose). When I connect the phone via usb cable the phone pops up a notification and when I click on it have the choice to mount the phone. At that time thunar pops up and shows the directory. I can browse the phone, add music, download/view photos, etc. This also worked in Zenwalk and Slackware 13_64.
