In any case, one way to test and possibly fix it would be to back up your user data on an external medium, and reinstall Salix.
If you feel comfortable taking your computer out of its case, one of the commonest things is poor connectivity with RAM. Remove the memory and gently clean the connectors with a pencil eraser. You could also try swapping them round, if there are two or more identical cards. In a dry climate, it is important to take antistatic precautions to avoid frying the components (Google these).
It is possible that I may have unintentionally meessed up the system ! Ihave other OS's
I think gapan is on the right trail. This would be confirmed if your other OSs are behaving ok (if it were hardware, they would probably play up, too).
Already have the nvidia driver installed and its been working fine for about a year. I don't want to drive you guys nuts anymore, so let's put this one to bed. Maybe I'll reinstall at a later date. Thanks for your prompt attention. Oh, and the compositor was not enabled.

Wait. Did you reinstall the driver after the upgrade? If you upgraded your kernel, you have to.
Also, if you did an upgrade from 14.0 to 14.1 (I thought you just meant a regular package upgrade) the scope for error is greater. For instance, as gapan says, you'd need to reinstall the nvidia driver.
But if none of that does the trick, rather than throwing in the towel altogether, you might as well just do a fresh install of 14.1. It only takes five or ten minutes, and everything will most probably just work.

No...did not install after upgrade. This is 14.1 and I don't believe there was a kernel upgrade. I mean that's not a usual part of a package upgrade right ? Anywho, did a fresh install for peace of mind for all.
