Solved: My computer is slower than it used to be

Post by tharpa »

May or may not be off-topic. I have definitely noticed that my computer is slower the last month or so, and freezes up more often. Where would you suggest I start looking for the cause or fix of the problem?

Opening the case and removing any dust might be a good idea. Especially from inside and around all the fans.

Could be any number of things. In addition to Gapan's suggestion, I would make sure you have a backup of any essential data on this PC. Of course this is valid even if you don't notice any problems. Make sure S.M.A.R.T. error reporting is enabled in the BIOS, which can give you advance warning of impending drive failure.

No dust. It has had a long-standing problem with overheating, which I treat with a cooling pad. Shortly after this post, I started getting a warning that the battery could only be charged to 43%, and that this could indicate problems with the battery. I replaced the battery, and have not had the problems with slowness since.

Glad you figured it out, now if you could edit the first post and add "Solved" to the title. ;)
