Are rpm packages good for Salix/Slackware systems?
My wife (her netbook has Salix 14.1 Mate installed) has bought a new printer, a Canon Pixma MG2550. The Linux driver provided by Canon is, according to its web, for Fedora installations. I've downloaded it, decompressed, and I can see, beside a script named install.sh, four rpm packages (two for i386 and two for x86_64), in addition to a few language files.
Can she run this install.sh?

Re: rpm packages and Salix/Slackware
Thanks, Didier, for your answer.
Unfortunately, it does not work. As a first step, I tried to install cnijfilter packages, I've converted and installed both without problems, I had checked if the packages are installed (they are), installed pangox-compat with Sourcery and checked also if the usb connection was fine (it was). But starting cups, the things go bad: inside cups it was not possible to find the printer; despite this, I've added manually the printer and, as said, it does not work
And now I don't know how follow the installation. And after that it will come the installation of the scanner, but it will be in the future...

Re: rpm packages and Salix/Slackware
Just in case, maybe you downloaded the drivers for the MG3550, not the MG2550?
For the MG2550 they are here:

No, the drivers were for 2500 series. And I restarted cups before to try the installation.

Then to check that your printer is seen by the usb sub-system, plug it in and switch it on then after a few seconds type in a terminal:Here is what I get for instance:
Code: Select all
sudo dmesg|tail
Code: Select all
[ 4882.328949] usb 1-1.2: new high-speed USB device number 7 using ehci-pci
[ 4882.417493] usb 1-1.2: New USB device found, idVendor=04a9, idProduct=176e

Re: rpm packages and Salix/Slackware
I had that problem not so liong ago with Slackel that my cannon printer
was not listed and therefore not found by cups.
It was solved when Djemos added a file then all the myriads of Canon printers
were listed. You can find it in http://www.slackel.gr/forum/.

Re: rpm packages and Salix/Slackware
Thanks, Atip, the installation of Djemos' cnijfilter-common-3.60-i386-1.txz package has (partially) solved this problem. Now, the printer runs, but only in black, not in color (because this I say "partially"). Besides, I installed manually the newest gutenprint package (5.2.11) which is, according to developers, "experimental" for Canon Pixma MG2550.
This weekend I will try to get the color printing. And then achieve the scanner running. I will not be boring
And, of course, big thanks to Djemos.
