Hello

Post by omns »

Hello all,

I've stumbled across Salix this morning while reading a review on another site. In the past I've used Zenwalk quite extensively and at the moment am quite involved with CrunchBang which has moved to a Debian/Xfce base. I'm genuinely interested and excited by what I've been reading here this morning and am looking forward to testing Salix out when my download finishes.

This looks like a warm and welcoming community with lots of familiar faces from past projects. I'm looking forward to spending some time here :)

Omns! Fancy meeting you here! I just joined too, downloading the iso as I type this. I'm "dixiedancer" on the Crunchbang forum. We must have read the same articles - perhaps referred by the same thread on the other forum.

I'm completely intrigued by what I could find on the web about this distro. I get a sense - and you guys feel free to correct me if I'm wrong about this - that SalixOS is trying to do with Slackware what Ubuntu - at least at first - was aiming to do with Debian: Stay true to its philosophy and fully compatible with it; simplify it for "ordinary desktop users;" and provide an easy introduction to Slackware Linux for new users.

Except for a brief flirtation with PCLinuxOS and Slax, all I have known of Linux 'til now has been Debian/Ubuntu-based. This looks like a whole 'nother world, completely different from what I've been used to. I've become an Xfce fan along the way too, and this looks like a great implementation of Xfce, judging my the screenshots and stuff.

The Slackware base is sure to be a fun and challenging adventure for me too. SalixOS looks like a sweet install-and-go option for "relatively inexperienced" users but without the hassle of 6-month releases, frozen-in-time and littered with dependency cruft.

I've searched this site using the term "rolling release" and came up empty. But from what I have gleaned in the forums for the past couple of hours, this looks like a welcome respite from the bi-annual hassle, from updates rushed to users that cripple a working system, and from the weird Debian package dependency stuff that sometimes feels like "one step forward, two steps back."

Glad to be here with another Crunchbanger,
Robin

Yes, the idea is to be able to install our favorite OS for our friend, neighbors, schools, family, grandparents, etc. yet not having to hold their hand while they perform basic system management themselves.

Hi Robin, I'm not so sure about the Ubuntu analogy. Ubuntu seems to have always been about the doing its own thing.

My interest here is in finding a distro that is similar to another one but seems to be doing it in a way I can sit more comfortably with. That's not to say there is anything wrong with the other distro. Both are fine efforts :)

Welcome to Salix! I have been alpha testing #! 10 and it is shaping up to be a very nice OS. I love your website! The openbox auto-build script for Arch was a huge time saver. This is one of the most friendly communities I have ever encountered and believe me when I tell you this because I have done my research for I am alittle of a distro-hopper.

I have never used a Slackware based distro or Slackware itself, I mainly use Arch Linux, Archbang, and #! although with #! I will have to wait until it is final, I keep getting kernel panics but it is my laptop not the OS. Anyway for every question I asked I got a quick response and they did not make me feel like a total idiot for asking, very rare these days.

Yeah no problem my friend. You did a nice job on the Xfce version of #! 10 and I really don't like the Xfce desktop, yet I keep coming back to it, odd.

I wish I could take credit for that but Statler is all corenominal's work. Yes we shared lots if ideas in the build up to the first release but the Alpha is all his baby. Philip often says he is just the workhorse for the communities ideas so maybe my DTX scripts had some influence on the final makeup as well. Who knows? :)
