[Solved] External DVD-RW Not Detected

Post by zaen »

Hello,

The external portable DVD-Writer I bought cannot be detected by Salix. The laptop can power it up through the USB connection but the drive does not appear in the desktop or in file manager. K3b, XFBurn or Brasero still point to the builtin DVD drive of my laptop as the only option. What shall I do to make the portable drive accessible by the OS?

laptop: AcerAspire 4736Z
OS: Salix 13.0.2 (installed from Live CD)
external DVD-Writer: LG Portable Super Multi Drive (USB-2) Model GP08NU20

Thanks for your help.

Well, this is embarrassing.

I was an idiot! It turned out that I must use the "main" end of the Y-style usb cable to make it work. If I use the shorter end alone, it wont work which was the case yesterday. I also found out that I can use both ends of the Y-cable on the two usb ports of my laptop and it will work.

Data DVDs and DVD-movies are automatically detected now. Anytime something is loaded in the drive, it appears in the desktop, heheh.

Brasero failed it's first burning project in this drive, though. I wanted to overwrite a DVD-RW and burn an iso. Brasero got stuck on the "creating md5sum file." I canceled and opened xfburn.

Now here's one reliable burner app. The same project burned successfully. I can also confirm that my LG's model number accurately appeared in xfburn's DVD-drive identification dialog box. As a matter of fact, ever since I used Salix I have burned more than a dozen DVDs already using xfburn and not one failed. K3B (1.0.5) although just occasionally used also never failed-just like the Salix OS itself.

Anyway, sorry for this Y-cable mistake. My fault. Please consider this solved.

Thanks.

Because this end is only there to provide more electrical power. It does not have the data pins connected ;)

That's the first report that I see that mentions xfburn working more reliably than brasero. If you search the forums you'll find cases of exactly the opposite and we've switched from xfburn to brasero for that reason. Having more input on that from others would be welcome. Both of them work fine here.
