How-To: Installing TeX Live 2024 on Salix OS 15.0

Post by gaucho »

Hello, forum members,

I have a fresh installation of Salix 15.0 Xfce on one of our desktop PCs, so I got the urge to experiment with installing TeX Live 2024 via an ISO image. (This is the first time that I've done it in several years, as I have been using Overleaf online.)

In case you're interested, I wrote up the procedure that I followed. I hope that it will be useful for anyone considering whether/how to install a full TeX Live version on their Salix system.

The document is 15 pages long (362 kB) and includes screenshots. It was typeset with LaTeX using the hyperref package.

It has been publicly shared from the Keep&Share link below:

The PDF should display immediately in Preview mode. You do not need to create a Keep&Share account in order to download the file. Just click on the Download icon:

I had to do something like that back in Salix 13.x and 14.x (except I use LyX myself instead of TeXstudio and TeXworks). Of course I didn't keep notes and forgot everything. Thank you for this detailed guide!
A pleasant detail in this forum: several people pick a picture of their pet as their avatar. Who am I to do otherwise? ;-)

Hello gaucho,

thanks for sharing.

I have a friend who is blind, a former maths teacher an avid TexLive user and is interested in getting software more recent than the ones provided as packages. He uses Slint (another Slackware derivative) rather than Salix but i assume that your instructions are still valid in this context.

I have sent him your how-ho but as the pdf contains images it would probably be easier for him to read from the sources of the how-to.

Would you mind make them available to him, one way or another?

Thanks,
Didier

Hello, Didier,

Yes, I would be happy to produce a version of the TL guide without images for your friend. But I am not sure of the best way to do this ... I can think of a few options:

a). A revised version of the PDF in which I would remove all images. (I do not know whether the "callout boxes" [highlighted in red] will cause a problem for whatever screen reader program your friend is using).

Image

b). I can send the .tex source file but it contains the "messy" LaTeX markup with embedded commands (as shown above) -- which would be a real bother to wade through. IIRC, TeX Live includes a 'detexify' utility that strips out all the LaTeX markup. So ...

c). I can run 'detexify' on the file, and then send a plain text file or paste it into a LibreOffice Writer .odt document.

Does one of these options sound better than another?

If you could send me your friend's e-mail address via a PM here in the forum, I can e-mail the document(s) to him/her. Or I can e-mail it to you ... Whatever is most convenient. :)
