Not a happy experience

Post by dave1953 »

Sadly things aren’t going my way with trialling Slackel. I keep a ‘spare’ Thinkpad T430 for testing distributions on actual hardware. Neither Slackel Openbox or KDE will load on the T430. I insert the usb (yes I did try every available usb socket), press the correct button to get into the boot menu, select the usb stick entry but get thrown back into the boot menu(?). Frustrating.

So I then try both of the usb sticks in my main machine, with mixed results. The Openbox usb boots normally and correctly presents the Slackel Openbox desktop, live desktop works absolutely correctly. Played with it a while, all good works fine. On to the KDE usb. Boots fine, goes through boot up script, then…… nothing but a flashing cursor in the top left hand corner of the screen.

I’m at a loss. Every other usb stick I’ve written (balena etcher) with the exception of Calculate Linux and now Slackel boots up correctly and works fine.

Any thoughts anyone?

Slackel KDE iso is too old. (2016) Do not use it.

If Secure Boot is enabled in the BIOS, it might prevent booting from a USB drive. You may need to disable Secure Boot in the BIOS settings.

When create the Slackel 8.0 LIVE USB be sure to name the usb label "LIVE" without quotes.
If you run another linux distribution can use Unetbootin to create a bootable USB. In this case the usb label has to be named LIVE. If it is named differently then booting from usb has to pass the parameter medialabel=your_usb_label_name. To do this press Tab and type in the end for example
for a usb named myusb type medialabel=myusb
You can also use the script install_on_usb.sh existed in iso in boot folder to create the usb in any distribution. Read the respective instructions in this file: README_INSTALL_ON_USB.TXT

Thanks. Secure boot disabled. I’ll take a good look at your suggestion, thank you.
