Hello!

Post by Grampa Bear »

I'm rather new to Linux and not exactly the brightest with computers. I've been trying to find some type of linux that was easy for a old goat like myself to use. Want to get away from Windows and its cost. I tried Zenwalk on my old computer, a used Dell my grandson bought for me (P4 2.4 ghz., 512 RAM, 80 gigabite hard drive). I liked Zenwalk, but it was a bit difficult for me at times to get things to work. I'm 66 years old and the mind isn't as sharp as it once was.

A lightning strike to a power pole by my home destroyed the Dell and I finally got a replacement for it. It's a bit faster and has more RAM, and I'm looking at trying Salix on it. Unfortunately I use a dial-up modem so doing the update program will be really slow. I really hope Salix will work for me.

Welcome Grampa Bear! I hope you'll find what you're looking for in Salix. If you have any troubles, please post them in our forums.

By the way, if you have access to a fast internet connection in another location (I'm guessing that since you downloaded the .iso image, you do), it is possible to download the entire salix and slackware package repositories there and with the help of a portable hard drive, move them to your PC, where you can use them with the package manager to add software as if they were online repositories.

Sorry I haven't replied sooner. I have a fair sized (3 acre) vegetable garden, a very small orchard, and a few bee hives to take care of and it's all been keeping me a bit busy lately.

I don't have a high speed connection readily available at home, I live a bit over 38 miles from a town with a computer shop with a high speed connection. I'm writing this from there now, they rent internet access by the hour. They don't let you use your own at their shop. My grandson downloaded the CD and brought it down to me (he lives just west of St. Louis, MO. appprox. 221 miles from me).

My grandaughter gave me the little Dell netbook she used at university. She finished her BA and bought a newer, faster, more powerful notebook to use while she works towards her doctorate. I may also try installing Salix on the netbook also. All I need is a bit of time. Thanks for letting me join the forum.

Y'all take care,
Grampa
