Failed to start X server

Post by Steerpike »

Hey guys. New to Salix OS, and I'm not a linux expert by any means.

I got the OS installed, but there's no graphical interface. Get a message that says it failed to start X server, and that it is not set up correctly.

I have a Toshiba Satellite with an Intel GMA 4500HD graphics card.

There is a bunch of error output - I'm not sure which of it you'd all need to see. It says there is a fatal error - no screen found. The drivers in the xorg conf. are showing up as "intel" and "vesa," but there is an error associated with each that says no monitor is specified.

I'm at a complete loss of what to do. Any thoughts, or is this perhaps too complicated a problem for someone who doesn't know a whole lot about linux?

Thanks!

just to update -

I have the latest xf86-video-intel driver installed, apprently. Running xorgsetup didn't help. I can't run xorgconfig. I see the xorg.config file. Going to try editing that. Not quite sure what to try though.

Xorg seems to configure fine with some other distros (sabayon, ubuntu, etc.), but not here for some reason. I was hoping for a nice lean distro to use instead of those others. Any recommendations for fixing this or for other distros to try?

Ok, PROGRESS at last.

I changed the driver from "intel" to "vesa" in my xorg.conf and now it works. Only vesa doesn't support my screen resolution.

Any idea what I can do to get the intel driver working?

Get us some error messages and even more what error messsages/logs you're showing us, i.e. where they are from. Telling us you've got errors but not posting any more information about them, e.g. where they appeared, only tells us what you've already said: "You've got a problem". ;) :P

You could try another driver package:

Ok, thanks guys. Going to try another driver package when I get a chance. If that doesn't work I will post the error messages verbatim. Thanks!
