The VideoLAN team hypocrisy?

Post by zAchAry »

VLC 1.1.0 removes SHOUTcast support
http://www.videolan.org/press/2010-1.html
http://www.videolan.org/news.html#news-9
VideoLAN is sad to announce that, starting from VLC 1.1.0, the SHOUTcast module is not available on the distributed VLC any longer, because AOL Corporation is hindering Open Source Software.
AOL wants to force VLC to be relicensed to close-source and shipped with an adware software from them.
You can find more information.
OTOH (on the other hand) they're NOT saying it out loud where does VLC collects the covers of each file/title that it is playing, maybe from an X company or an X search engine (of images) that itself can collect and IS collecting statistics of the most popular titles etc. for future potential business? (I know where the covers are collected from and I, intentionally, did not wrote it. please, do not mention the source as well)
Hhmm... according to our statistics in the past year, we can build a new type band and music to promote... we will make PROFIT off of it :D
What do you think?

To be honest, I'm using VLC.

Are there any problems with Exaile?
SHOUTcast have been working with Exaile of Salix 13.2.1 and a few month ago it didn't worked with SHOUTcast. SHOUTcast have changed their layout or api or whatever.

Exaile removed Shoutcast support, see: http://exaile.org/
The shoutcast plugin has been removed from the default install, as shoucast has changed their API and the new terms of service are not compatible with our license.

They don't need to. Anybody who's interested in it can look at the art providerS in the share/lua/meta/art/ directory of the source tarball or at those actually installed in the usr/lib[64}/vlc/lua/meta/art/ directory on his system. That's the big advantage of open-source software and why closed-source encryption/security software sucks.
They're not even enabling that feature by default!
