units

Post by caitlyn »

I needed to remember the conversion between grams and ounces and drew a momentary blank. I opened a terminal window and was surprised to find out that SalixOS doesn't include units. OK, so just install it from the repository, right? Um... no, we don't have it. I built a package from the SBo script and now I have it.

The point to this story: Units is an incredibly useful and tiny little app that seems to come with most distros, at least the big ones. May I humbly suggest that it be included on future isos? Installed size is all of 323K.

For those not familiar with Units see: http://www.gnu.org/software/units/units.html

gonvert is a GUI program. Sometimes the command line is faster/easier. You'd think a bunch of Slackware geeks would want a CLI utility. ;)

Google is useless without an internet connection. There are times I do use my netbook without one :)

I still think units would be a very good addition to SalixOS, and a very small one at that.

Oh Gonvert is really good, it even does shoe sizes! I hadn't spotted it before.
I have been using my AJ metric handbook (yes a proper book) for years. I think I'll keep it as backup though. :D

Rich, while I appreciate your efforts I think you missed the part of my original post where I said I had already built the packages from Slackbuilds.org. I have units installed and working. The point of my post was a suggestion for future releases, nothing more. :D

IMHO no need to have it on the ISO, but of course good to have it in the repo.

But does it know the diameter of Neptune, or convert Athenian cubits to Roman feet? Can it tell you the weight of 4 cups of sifted cake flour in grams? Units is a geeks delight. 8-)
