Please use code tags especially for such extremely long pastes or upload them to some other site.
Could you complete that listing? Or is the second drive (sdb) not listed at all? What kind of drive is it? What partition map?

@fran,

(to gain some time...)

I think (but I may be wrong) Shador was referring to your first post when he asked:
Could you complete that listing?
meaning about the complete error message when the booting process is failing. It is already clear that sdb17 is where you installed Salix, but the complete error message might give Shador some direction so to be able to help you.

Yes, I need to know what exactly the kernel is seeing to judge why it's failing to use /dev/sdb17 as your root.

So it's apparently not seeing the sdb drive which brings me back to one of my other original questions: What sort of drive is this? How is it connected? What partition map/table/layout?

Ah, now we're getting there. USB drivers are not built into the kernel therefor you need to make the respective modules available early during boot with a initrd.

Something like this should suffice (depending on your system change the kernel version and rootfs here ext4):

Code: Select all

mkinitrd -c -k 2.6.37.6-smp -u -m ehci_hcd:uhci_hcd:ohci_hcd:xhci-hcd:usb-storage -w 10 -f ext4 -r <root> -o /boot/initrd-2.6.37.6-smp
You need to run that from your Salix installation use chroot to access it.

Afterwards add the initrd to your bootloader.

Sorry, for being that short, but it's getting late. FYR http://salixos.org/forum/viewtopic.php?f=16&t=3334 That one was a bit more complicated as the device was intended to be moved between machines and thus the device name was not stable.

Thanks Shador.
I will try hoping with your help putting a SOLVED on this thread.

Thanks Shador. It really seems I am rather unfortunate. I followed your instructions. I put the kernel you written (I installed the latest SalixOS Mate) and indicated ext4 (my fs too) and then I gave mkinitrd via chroot.
As an immediate response from the terminal I had "10509 blocks" (not sure if this can be useful).
Unfortunately I still have a kernel panic.

Is there a /boot/initrd-2.6.37.6-smp file? Did you add it to lilo and run lilo -c -v? Or whatever else your bootloader is?
