Regarding the partitions and their sizes, the default should be fine.

As for the rest, hardware trouble unfortunately remains a possibility.
I believe I did run the multimedia codec installer, and I replaced the cmos battery from another older pc as the bios kept reporting the wrong date and the wrong cpu speed.
I did run an upgrade from the slaptget module and it was like 180 mb of updates.

I would like to install the ati radeon driver, but the biggest issue at the moment is that the pc will freeze or reboot when I try and do almost
any action making it impossible to get anything done.

That can only mean one thing: bad hardware.

I'd start by checking the RAM using memtest. Cleaning up any dust from inside the case might help too.

Also check CPU temp when it freeze or reboot, check in bios if there is a hardware monitor, there you will se the temp.
I had a computer that had similar freeze and reboots and the grease between CPU and cooler was very hard.
The computer worked as long as the CPU load was low but as soon there was litle more load it freeze or rebooted.
When cleaned and replaced with new grease it worked again.
