problem booting up

Post by svend plaha »

just installed xfce 32 bit version of salix on pentium 3 (coppermine ) 733mhz. with 500mb ram and 30 gig hd
booting for the first time it stops executing during initializing around these lines

Starting udevd: /sbin/udevd --daemon
Triggering udev events: /sbin/udevadm trigger --action=add

I am replacing windows xp, new linux user. the pc is connected by ethernet cable. it is an se6 abit motherboard.
the pc I'm on is in another room, running win 7. so this is how I am able to write this.

to be honest I am not familiar with the linux system, but could apply my windows experience, eg. edit a file. but I need to be shown which editor to launch and the keystrokes and commands I need to edit the required files to fix this. can someone with patience and/or experience confer with me on this issue please.

I feel success is close at hand, and once I get it up and running, I am planning on really using it to learn the linux environment as I think it is a much more rewarding experience to have some understanding and control over your system. with windows, its like stick in the disk and sit back and watch the show folks, and it kind of leaves you feeling empty. Linux is good for the soul.

Which Salix edition - 14.0? Did you select to autoinstall ("wipes everything with few choices")? If not, did you create a swap partition?

Welcome to Salix, by the way :)

I'm sure as you say this is soluble but that may require a bit of patience - unless a hardware defect is the root cause. 500MB RAM should be enough for xfce.

Oh, and did you check the integrity of your download? I'm not actually sure how you would do so on a Windows system but Iam sure there's a way. Did you burn to CD or install from USB? If the latter, how did you create the USB?

>>yes 14.0.1 version. yes autoinstall, it creates the /home /swap ..

This is most likely some hardware acting up. First try to unplug anything non-essential from your PC and see if it boots.

omg....omg....yes....you did it!! I unplugged a usb connected printer and it worked. that was easy. you made it look easy, but I am sure there was a lot of wisdom behind it.

It was an autoinstall, and I only chose basic, but I really wanted full install with all the bells and whistles. I did basic to try and just see if it works. now IT WORKS....got past the problem, with your help. to get the full install, I guess I will have to reinstall right?

I am deeply humbled , thanks again for fixing my problem.

There are certain things that come up time and again, but indeed, I didn't think of that one; so gapan must be wiser then me ;)

You could in principle get from Basic to Full, but it'd be quicker and more reliable to install Full.

You might like to have a look at the Salix Startup Guide, available through a link at the front of the wiki. It is a bit out of date but still largely applicable, for instance about the basics of package management.

everything is going ok. I stepped away to brush the dog when it was re installing, and did not get the option to select between the standard or those other video resolutions, so it must have selected the standard for me. anyway, seems stable. I do have a crt monitor it is 17" sony multiscan G200. I think the video card inside is an ati radeon, like maybe a 9200 agp. and I was wondering what if anything can be done to tweak that hardware? Thank you for helping me to address the stuck bootup. hey that would be a good name for a band...stuck bootup..it rhymes.

What printer is that? You could try plugging it to a different usb port.

I am having some issues now that it boots up as I try out the programs.
but will get back to the printer afterwards.

-- issue with Parole , I can't play cd's or audio files. Parole is giving me the red circle with the white line -GStreamer backend error,
No URI handler implemented for "cdda"

-- issue re OS crashing spontaneously when I try to use the web browser, or freezes and needs reboot when I try and do anything like typing on a web page or looking at the properties of a file..

-- issue, re: Disk Management I have 30 gigs and would like to use it all and need instructions as to what size to make each of the partitions, like the home and swap, and to use the rest of disk space as well. salix already made all these partitions but I'm thinking maybe the system crashes are occuring because those partitions need to be bigger?

I have a Sound blaster audigy sound card and an ATI radeon AGP 4X graphics card, abit se6 mobo, 30 gb hd, dvd, dvd rw,floppy, 1/2 gb ram,
cpu intel, pentium 3/733 with a 133 speed side bus.
since this pc has not been used, the bios settings sometimes need to be fixed, such as telling it what speed to set cpu, the date too.
also, I'm a total newb but highly motivated. you assistance greatly appreciated to revive this old clunker...not sure if that is ME or the PC...hmmmm

Did you run the codecs installer (in Multimedia)? These codecs aren't there by default because of copyright issues in some countries.

Regarding the partitions and their sizes, the default should be fine.

As for the rest, hardware trouble unfortunately remains a possibility.
