Salix is in general the best, but it may be perfect

If you have any suggestions or ideas about improving Salix, here's the place to post them.

I meant applications from other source, then the Salix or Slackware sources.

If there is no distribution specific package available you have to compile from source. But that's the same for all distributions.

Download XNview source (tarball). Untar it to any folder (i.e. Desktop). Read the README file and check for dependencies. If there are any do the following for them as well! Open xterm (or any other CLI) an become superuser:

Code: Select all

su
provide your root password...
Now go to the folder where you untared the source:

Code: Select all

cd /home/your_username/Desktop/XNview-x.x.x
./configure
make
make install
Cheers ;)

Except I just had a look in the tarball, and this isn't open source. There is a scary script called 'install' that puts the precompiled binary somewhere in your $PATH. The website indicates that there is a dependency "lesstif", which is available from the repos. So one would need to make sure that was installed first.

Something like this, starting in the directory you downloaded to:

Code: Select all

$tar -zxvf xnview-tarball.tgz
$cd xnview-directory
$su
#chmod +x install
#./install
However, I briefly tried it on my system (probably not really a good idea to have done that, because who knows what the code does apart from display pictures), and it didn't work. Is there an application available from the repos (or already provided) that would do the job?

You think it could collect personal data, or just send user statistics to developers?

It say's it's just image viewer and converter... so any image manipulation software should do the job. Oracle I think that you can find similar software to xnview here, IF you don't find anything similar in Salix repos! Personally I prefer GIMP for image manipulation and GPicView as image viewer. Good luck ;)

Guys, thank you, but the help thread is somewhere else.
I opened for it this.

You're quite right Oracle, one topic per thread is clearer. Regarding image viewers, if you have more questions, maybe a new thread would be a good idea.

Regarding general advice about installing software from outside the repos, I think all there is to say is: try other options first, because it's quite likely not to work or even break your system if you don't know what you're doing. Beyond that, each case needs to be treated on its merits, perhaps starting with a close look at what the application's website has to say. But the very first question is whether software you already have installed will serve the purpose.

Tyee1 i agree.
The only reason why, i started this tread is that:
I want bring Salix to average user. 8-)
What use the average user?
That M*cr*s*ft sh*t.
Why he is using that?
Because he don`t see the other choices.
What he want?
Watch videos, doing some works, chating and playing games.
What Salix lacks?
One thing: configuration tools. (Ubuntu and his mutations has it but, well Ubuntu and his mutations are more like deterrent example, then advertising for Linux).

EDIT: I will buy the bankrupted M!crosoft, release they program libraries and put on them GNU GPL in period of 8 years. (That i wanted put into my subscribe.)

One who's flying too high falls too hard. If you really want to do that stop telling us that, and get busy... really busy. Read, learn, read, learn, then read again, then learn, learn again... When you've learned everything there is in computing... make something innovative... Now sell it at damn high price. Become a competition to MS, put BG on his knees, and make him sell you MS. You do the math (will it take 8 years or more). Now get some sleep!
Long story short: How to get successful:
Wake up early, work hardly, and get rich! Good luck and cheers. ;)
