Won't boot

Post by alemkr »

Not sure if anyone can answer this. I have been using Linux for a long time but am by no means an expert. I have an HP dv6t Laptop and have found only 3 distros that will boot from a Live CD or install for that matter. I have been wanting to try Salix but it, like many others won't boot either. Is there something hardware-wise that is preventing all these new distros from working? I have heard that the BIOS might be the problem but like I said some distros will boot and install, i.e., Mandriva, PCLinusOS, and the Ubuntu 10.10 beta.

HPDV6t:
Intel Core i7 720
6 GB RAM
200GB 7200 RPM hard drive
Nvidia GeForce 230M (1GB)

"Won't boot" is a very general description. Are there any error messages? Does the boot process stop at some point? If so, where? How far does it go?

I will have to get back to you for the exact line. It just hangs during loading. I believe that it hangs at a point with something about the device manager - udev.

Do you by any chance have a broadcom wireless card?

You need to blacklist the broadcom card for the installer to continue.

The below post contains a good detail of information regarding this:
