SalixOS gets mentions in my latest O'Reillypiece
Please pardon the shameless self-promotion
but... SalixOS does get mentioned in my latest o'Reilly piece: http://broadcast.oreilly.com/2010/09/lo ... linux.html I do think I point out a strong point: there aren't many lightweight distros with a 64-bit build.

Re: SalixOS gets mentions in my latest O'Reillypiece
Nicely written. Thanks for the mention Caitlyn.
BTW, you'll probably be glad to know that the next lxde release will include a 64bit version. The number of downloads for the live lxde iso show that lxde is just as popular as the xfce version.
As for your last point in your article, I personally would be very glad if there were as many options as you have there for preloaded linux. There is absolutely no way anyone can get a system preloaded with linux here in Greece. And there is also no way to get a system without windows preinstalled either, unless you go the DIY road. So, we still have a very long way to go.

You're very welcome. Thanks for the compliment. Mentions tend to happen when I like a distro and stick with it. I'd still be with VectorLinux if they had ever managed to get a 64-bit version out.gapan wrote:Nicely written. Thanks for the mention Caitlyn.
That is great news! The live versions are both 32-bit, aren't they? If so, will we ever see a 64-bit live version?gapan wrote:BTW, you'll probably be glad to know that the next lxde release will include a 64bit version. Sorry to hear that. I do agree we have a long way to go. FWIW, I used to travel to your country (or at least Athens) on business fairly regularly in the '90s. I very much enjoyed Greece. Friendly people, very welcoming, and I'm a history buff so I never could get enough free time to see all I wanted to see. Great food, toogapan wrote:As for your last point in your article, I personally would be very glad if there were as many options as you have there for preloaded linux. Yes, they are both 32bit only. I know there were plans to create a 64bit live xfce iso at least. But as I'm not really involved with the live CDs, I don't know if plans changed.caitlyn wrote:That is great news! The live versions are both 32-bit, aren't they? Honestly, food in Athens is the worst you can get in Greece.caitlyn wrote:Sorry to hear that. I do agree we have a long way to go. Very nice read! Thanks for the all-around promotion
JRD started work on the 64-bit live kernel some time back & put it on hold when we entered the last phase of the recent dual LiveCD release.
I'm pretty sure he is intent on resuming as soon as possible, but he is being kept very busy at his work ATM.

What really matters is where you are going, not where you come from.

NO KIDDING!!!
You are Caitlyn Martin, I couldn't figure it out after seeing your profile page, lol
I've bookmarked some of your articles, long time ago (e.g. Why Is Firefox For Linux So Terribly Broken?).
I used to read some when I used Windows and I was planning to migrate (as softly as possible) to GNU/Linux.
Well done!

Yes, zAchAry, that's me. Guilty as charged
Akuna: Thanks for the information. Having a 64-bit live build in the works is very good news. A lot of people prefer to try a live CD and install from that rather than downloading a different iso.
gapan: The man in charge of our office in Athens took me to a little taverna on the waterfront in Piraeus that actually had excellent fish and seafood. I guess that technically isn't Athens. He also introduced me to retsina wine which sounded horrible but actually compliments fish very well. I've even bought a bottle imported from Greece here in the States now and again.
