LDAP authentication - is it possible?

I have a virtual network on VirtualBox. One of my virtual machines is an Ubuntu box running as a LDAP server, and other Ubuntu machine where I can authenticate using that LDAP database. I wish to include Salix clients in my virtual network, but there's a problem: Slackware-based distros don't have PAM. Is there a way to do LDAP authentication without PAM?
