I could create usb boot of Windows from salix?

Post by zerdna »

I could create usb boot of Windows from salix, I do not want to have to install a virtual machine just to create the boot usb.

I try with command DD but is very slow.

any advice?

Thanks. ;)

Do you mean you are running Windows, and you have downloaded an .iso, and want to create a Salix bootable USB?

Maybe this will help:

http://www.salixos.org/wiki/index.php/H ... _a_USB_key

or maybe this is what you want to do:

http://www.salixos.org/wiki/index.php/I ... _USB_stick

In any case, good luck! I can certify that the first works, easily. (If not, try formatting the stick.) I've never tried the second.

Do you mean create a bootable Windows memory stick, adapting Salix tools to do so? If you manage to do that, I'd be quite interested to know how!

Anyway, good luck once again.

Sorry my English is very bad, can you speak Spanish?

Lo que quiero saber es si existe alguna herramienta de linux para crear una usb booteable de windows 7 sin tener que instalar una maquina virtual con algun windows.

Un saludo y muchas gracias.

Thanks you.

Falo sim "portunhol" ;)

I haven't tried this but it shouldn't be too difficult using syslinux.

Just copy the contents of the DVD to your USB stick, install syslinux with the chain.c32 module and add something like this to your syslinux.cfg:

Code: Select all

label -
menu label Windows 7
kernel chain.c32
apppend ntldr=/BOOTMGR
Hope this helps.

But this will produce a "Windows install USB". Zerdna mentioned using virtualisation, and if I understood correctly, the idea is to create a "Live Windows USB" - which as far as I know is impossible; even a virtualised Windows is I believe not easily portable to another physical machine, and I'm sure that's intentional. But see this:

http://www.virtualbox.org/wiki/Migrate_Windows

I haven't tried it, but the instructions look thorough. This is for XP - may or may not be tweakable for 7.

However, if you do just want a more robust installation medium, using USB should be quite straightforward.
