When I try to connect I get a "Connection Failed: Unable to get IP address" error.
I was reading on my laptop for a couple of hours when I decided to get on the web and noticed the problem. Strangely, I rebooted into Zenwalk which also uses wicd and ran into the same problem. But in Debian with network manager, no problems.
Oh lord, stuck inside Debian .....again.
Suggestions, advice - appreciated.

Re: wireless will not connect - unable to get ip address
Hello
I've got a Dlink key wifi
The command #lsusb send me Bus 001 ...D-Link System
I've the packages wpa_supplicant
I've launched wicd Network Manager and Disconnect All and after Refresh : a new icon dlink has appeared ; just click on Properties and choose WPA 1/2 (Passphrase) ; Connect and it's ok
As simple as Debian !
Have a nice day.

I am not sure what you mean when you say
However same result, wicd scans and then eventually comes back with the same "unable to find IP address." No results with ping as well.

Sorry, feeling a little dense this morning, upon further reflection, I ran the command lsusb and it does identify my receiver correctly.

Re: wireless will not connect - unable to get ip address
My experience with a similar problem was that although I managed to configure it manually, it was then very hard to get it working with wicd again; something in some configuration file must have been changed. If I had to do it again, I would be more scrupulous about making backups of absolutely everything and recording each step taken.
That was in a situation where I knew my wireless hardware should have been supported by Salix - and eventually it did work. But the first thing to establish in your case is surely whether that is true of your hardware. If not, just fiddling with wicd isn't likely to get you very far.
One approach might be to try connecting manually using a live cd session. If it works, you know your hardware's supported. If it doesn't, try an earlier or newer version of Salix.
Arch has very good documentation on setting up wireless:
https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Wireless_Setup
but section 3.1.1.2 here is shorter and clearer as a starting-point:
https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Beginners'_Guide
Apologies if you know all this stuff already! and good luck

I will review the Arch doc's and try a live CD session with the latest release. I had the same thoughts about a configuration file being changed, although by an update because I had not done anything related to my wireless or any of the config files.
But, what does not make sense (to me anyway) is, I am having the same problem with Zenwalk running on another partition. While we have had some updates recently, I have not updated Zenwalk since I installed it to see what the new xfce looked like. So, both worked fine and neither works now.
So, back to the drawing boards
& thanks for the advice.

Re: wireless will not connect - unable to get ip address
Can you provide the output from ifconfig and tell us what kind of security your using on your router (WEP, WPA(2), WPS etc).
Can also confirm whether your using a USB or PCI(-e) wifi device and provide the output from either lsusb or lspci respectively.
You might also gleam some information from demsg or by manually configuring your network settings and watching for errors.

Ok, here we go:
Security: I beleive wpa-psk (wpa for sure)
Ifconfig:
lspci:
I am unclear as to how to find or get dmesg output, but I will look into it.
Hope this proves to be helpful - thanks!

Re: wireless will not connect - unable to get ip address
Looked at dmesg output, it's long so I'm not going to post it here unless necessary.
working connection: appears to try to connect once, is successful and then reports "No IPv6 routers present."
non-working connection: appears to try to connect four or five times and appears to fail again due to an inability to find a IPv6 router or address. But on the final try reports the link is associated.
If more detail is needed I can provide.

Re: wireless will not connect - unable to get ip address
By the look of your ifconfig output you seam to have been assigned an IP address and the error your seeing is similar to a problem I was having with my Atheros card not so long ago.
Try disabling power management and see if the problem persists:
If it works you can always add this to /etc/rc.d/rc.local so it's executed on system startup.
Try disabling power management and see if the problem persists:
Code: Select all
iwconfig wlan0 power off
