Slow deletes fluxbox 13.37?

Post by loukingjr »

I don't know if anyone else has noticed this but deleting a file seems to take a very long time. It takes 8-10 seconds for a file I delete to disappear from pcmanfm. Same with dragging a file to a different folder. Is there a fix or a workaround? thanks.

I've noticed this behaviour in pcmanfm and pcmanfm-mod, too.

I wonder if it's because pcmanfm is such an old version? I think it's up to .98 or .99. dunno

It works in the new pcmanfm, but the new one is a complete rewrite and has nothing to do with the old stable version. The new pcmanfm needs some additional deps (about 4 MB packaged) and it often crashes here when unmounting USB devices. The new version is unstable.

I see. I miss a lot of problems apparently because I do nothing but theme. I have a couple distros with 0.9.9 but I never mount or unmount usb devices. I often wonder how realistic a view I have of various Linuxes since I only run them in VirtualBox.

My statement is based on the pcmanfm svn version, which I've built yesterday. In the info it says version 0.9.9. It is of course possible that other "0.9.9" builds don't have this problem. E.g. on an OpenSuSE 11.2 computer I'm using pcmanfm 0.9.7 and it is the best pcmanfm I've used so far. No crashes.

I've encountered the slow delete problem yesterday night after switching to pcmanfm-mod (which is a fork of old pcmanfm) and for me this bug stops me from using this pcmanfm version.

I think this kind of thing is what helps keep Linux away from regular users. Most end users of computers would have no clue about why things go wrong or what to do about them. Personally I think Linux in general requires a bit more knowledge and a certain problem solving skill many people lack. Personally I like Linux quite a bit because it is so easy to theme compared to Windows and MacOSX (my OS of choice). A friend of mine who is fairly knowledgeable has managed to screw up his installs twice just trying to upgrade his Linux. I remember reading someone's signature on a Linux forum that read..."learning Linux, if it isn't broke, work on it till it is, then reinstall".

I don't see a major problem here. It's just: old pcmanfm is outdated and not developed anymore, new pcmanfm is still not stable (and there are no releases yet). It's a bit hard to find some really good file manager for lightweight desktops at the moment, it's no problem to just use KDE and be happy ;)

I have the same behaviour with Emelfm2 too, the only other X-filemanager I bothered to install so far. On the XFCE-edition everything seems to work fine (I have not tried pcmanfm there), and I have got that on a slower computer.
