pine From address wrong

Post by mimosa »

I've just realised alpine is sending out mail "from" mysalixusername@gmail.com. Not always, but especially replying or forwarding.

I've done a bit of research and also looked at likely files like .addressbook (empty), but can't so far get to the bottom of what may be going wrong with this otherwise generally helpful address-guessing behaviour. In this case, there is no chance to check and correct!

Does anyone have any ideas as to where I should look?

Reinstalling is an option, but I worry both that I may miss wiping some creepy config file, and that this is now something to do with the threads existing in my Gmail account, in which case that wouldn't help.

I'm also curious in general terms about how this automatic address feature works. All I've worked out so far is that ANYONE [TAB] in the To field gives you ANYONE@gmail.com. How does my alpine know about gmail?

Nothing visibly amiss in .pinerc.

My impression is that pine keeps some sort of database relating names to addresses, and an entry has been added associating my name with this incorrect email address. Or maybe it's in gmail, not pine. As you can imagine, I've done quite a bit of looking!

I think it comes from the user-domain setting in ~/.pinerc.

That setting seems to control the right-hand side of the address, so if I email To gapan<TAB>, gapan@gmail.com appears. I just deleted it in .pinerc and now I get gapan@darkstar.example.net. God knows how the left-hand side got buggered up! Still, it seems to be working its way out of the system now, and never apparently prevented people replying-to me rather than the address I saw in the headers. I actually wrote to him, chap called Andrew, and he was friendly enough to reply that he hadn't received any email meant for me.

I suspect Google, not Pine, was to blame. But I have no evidence except the lack of evidence incriminating Pine and the lack of transparency and feature-bloat of Google. That's circumstantial.
