[SOLVED] Salix and Grub2

Posted: 21. Jun 2012, 17:42
by fran
Hi. In my main drive I have Linux Mint 10, which controls the grub2 using <Grub customizer>. I installed Salix on a partition of external USB disk, along with other OS. I followed directions on the web and I was comforted by your Forum (Installation: Loading Salix OS using Ubuntu's GRUB2?). So I got rid of lilo at the end of the installation. In fact after reboot I see Salix on the list of OSs bootable. But unfortunately, at the boot as a result I got a <VFS: Cannot open root device "sdb17" or unknow-block (0,0); please append a correct "root=" boot option;here are the avaible partitions: (...) sda driver : sd (...) sda1 (...) sda 2 (...) sda 5 (..)> and then <(...) kernel panic - not syncing: VFS : Unable to mount root fs on unknow-block (0,0) (...)>
Any suggestion?

Yes, give me your partition layout and send me a 2-day all inclusive holiday trip somewhere far, far away. Ok that second part was just joking, but I'm serious about the first.
Hey, wait, I think you're eating banana ice cream right now. No? Wrong guess? Ok, maybe clairvoyant isn't the right job for me.

At least you attached the full error message. :) So my guess that you hit a bug in os-prober I read about. But let's see.

Do you have the output of fdisk -l and blkid too? It seems like maybe the device order is not stable but to be sure I would need the whole partition listing that goes with the kernel panic.

I don't know if this is part of the problem, but...

According to the "Start/End blocks", the order of some (primary and logical) partitions is "shifted" (not that it is a problem by itself, but maybe it is part of the cause for the difficulties to boot).

Code: Select all

sdb
1 - 3 - 2 - 4

13 - 12 - 11 - 19 - 5 - 6 - 17 - 7 - 18 - 8 - 9 - 16 - 14 - 15
with sdb4 as extended partition and sdb15 marked as bootable/active partition.

Thank you. I am aware that the partitioning over time is a little messed up. Nevertheless with the other OS I have no boot problems. The failure to start is own of Salix. I was wondering if (entering the system via chroot) I can install Grub2 in Salix.

You could try posting the info from the boot_info_script ( http://sourceforge.net/projects/bootinf ... nfoscript/ ). So maybe knowing what is currently in your Salix partition could help (post the results.txt from BIS, or at least the relvant info of the specific Salix partition). Now I'll leave the rest to Shador :).

According to the "Start/End blocks", the order of some (primary and logical) partitions is "shifted" (not that it is a problem by itself, but maybe it is part of the cause for the difficulties to boot).
No, completely unproblematic.

Could you complete that listing? Or is the second drive (sdb) not listed at all? What kind of drive is it? What partition map?
