[SOLVED] cannot install Canon MG5350 print drivers

Post by DaveCox »

Hello all,
I'm afraid I'm new to Salix OS and Linux in general, so I apologize if someone has already solved this. Recently my old Canon i865 printer died - I'd managed to easily install it under Cups on Salix OS 13.37 (xfce). I decided to buy another Canon, this time a MG5350 MFD. I've successfully installed it on my WinXP partition and my Wife's Win7 laptop, but can't get CUPS to print to it at all, I've tried USB, Socket and lpd types. CUPS detects the printer AOK from USB, and I downloaded the following archive from the Canon support site - cnijfilter-source-3.60-1.tar.gz, extracting it and trying to use the ppd files in there. However, the print jobs all immediately stop without a flicker from the printer - even when it is connected by USB. I am using CUPS 1.4.6 and I understand that CANON offer pre-compiled drivers for deb and rpm based distro's.

Can anyone help, or point me in the direction of some step-by-steps?

Thanks in advance

Dave Cox

Time for an update. After scratching my head a bit, re0reading the very sparse installation instructions that Canon provide and getting out of DOS mode and into BASH mode, I was finally able to make and install modules from the following folders incthe unpacked canon archive (cnijfilter-source-3.60-1.tar.gz.) Backend, backendnet, cnijfilter, libs, ppd and pstocanonij. I followed the instructions in the install files exactly and everything "seemed" to go AOK. Now, when detecting new printers in CUPS I can select the correct PPD, but print jobs still fail. A section of the CUPS log file is below:

E [16/Oct/2012:21:46:44 +0100] [Job 78] Stopping job because the scheduler could not execute a filter.

What an I doing wrong? Can anyone help? Should I be posting this in a CUPS forum?

Probably not what you want to hear, but in my opinion, what you did wrong was that you bought a printer that was not supported by CUPS. You should have done your research before buying it. Having some linux drivers for a couple of current linux distributions by canon doesn't mean anything at all. Do you think canon will be updating those drivers once they stop manufacturing that model next year or so? What do you thing the chances are that the drivers will be still working for a future release of those rpm or deb distributions? So, you're probably looking at a paperweight, now or in the future.

And yes, you'll probably have more luck with some CUPS-specific forum or mailing list.

Ouch, that hurt. It must've been International Smack A Newbie Day yesterday . . .

Yes, you're right, I should have posted to the CUPS user forum first, but I was a bit frazzled by compliling my first drivers and it not working. At all. In the slightest. So I apologise, rest assured I have recrified the fault.

To answer your other point, yes I *did* do research before buying the printer, but since my wife needed to print lesson-plans in a hurry and my sister in law wanted me to print Place holders for her wedding reception I didn't really have the time to ask questions in multiple forums, then wait for answers. But maybe these are distractions that other Salix'ers don't have . . .

Since my recently deceased Canon i865 had "just worked" with CUPS on Salix, I assumed that support for the type was pretty solid. Not as solid as HP, but then HP haven't made a decent printer in over 5 years; I know, we get nearly 15% of them back as RMA's where I work. Also, as you rightly point out, I chose a model that was near EOL with CANON assuming, incorrectly as it happens, that a well staffed and competent "Apple Inc. Sponsored" outfit like CUPS would have developed drivers (PPDs) for it by now. Also, CANON advertise it as havng "Universal" printing and is fully Apple OS X supported, I took that to mean native CUPS support, again wrongly. Lastly, it was cheap and in stock and all the reveiws praised it, though oddly they only reviewed its capability as a *print device* and not as a Linux peripheral, odd that.

So, in short I took an educated guess, as we all to sometimes.

I was wrong, I apologise, so sue me. But that doesn't excuse you making all kinds of assumptions when I come on here asking for help; after all it's not like I "WENT ALL CAPS AND ABUSIVE ON YO' ASS!!" now is it?

No need to take it so personally ;)
Yes you could have made the wrong choice for some reason... not really the end of the world. I too had similar problems initially with my canon mp610 when it first came out. Thankfully CUPS supports it fully now. So until the dust settles, you might find dedicated workaround for your printer on the net. Nobody's fault really except bad luck.

Long years ago, I had had a printer Canon and the only driver I found was TurboPrint
Have a look at http://www.turboprint.info/

Be sure the printer is not connected to the USB port.
Then download from here and install the files i386 or x86_64 according to your system with spkg -i package_name
Then plug in the printer and switch it on.

Thanks all for the suggestions.

It's all fixed now, :) Got in touch with the CUPS user forum (as I said to Gapan I should have done that first, but I was in a but of a panic), Gernot on there passed me on to the Gutenprint guys and the latest version (Gutenprint 5.2.9) supports the MG series of Canon MFD printers, yay! :D

Making and installing from the source went like a dream, probably due to Salix's Slackware DNA where everything is in the default locations, so no pathnames or flags to sort out.

Still a couple of very minor issues, but they seem to be due to the CUPS test page - If any of you have page scaling issues or issues with paper cassette allocation on CUPS, make sure you test them with actual documents and not just test prints, the behaviour is completely different (i.e. don't repeat my mistake).

So, all good now. Just got to see if SANE is working :D

Thanks

Dave Cox.
