Problem setting up Printers

Post by thomastt37 »

Hi though Im new to Salix 14.1..I have some experience with Ubuntu SUSE and PClinux..I have two Epson Printers one is a wireless SX235W all in one the other is a DX7400 all in one USB printer.
I go into Menu ..settings..Manage printing ..then I get the CUPs 1.5.4 screen..My printers are both shown but when I try to print something the printers are unable to be located? Can someone help please?
I would also like to be able to set up my Scanners at some stage so is Simple Scan available in the repository??
Any help appreciated

I just searched the repository:

Code: Select all

slapt-get --se simple-scan
(or you could use GSlapt) and it is installed on my printerless machine; I think it is installed as standard.

Regarding the problem of unlocatable printers, someone else has been having similar problems; can you please check if their workaround works for you, and report back here?

To find the relevant post, search the forum for CUPS.

By the way, welcome to Salix :)

Do check out the user guide:

http://docs.salixos.org/wiki/Salix_Startup_Guide

It's out of date, but still largely applicable.

You are using 14.1, which right now is in alpha state. That means that a lot of software is not yet included. Simple-scan is one of them. You could try xsane I guess.

About your printers: are you sure they are not paused? You're not providing much information on what problem you are facing.

Ah, I didn't notice you said 14.1. At this stage, especially if you are new to Salix, you would probably be best advised to stick with the latest stable release, 14.0. The alpha is really meant for development, packaging and testing.

I would like to make it clear that I am using Salix 14.0.1 xfce desktop 32bit version downloaded from sorceforge I didnt think that it was an Alpha Version? With regard to printing I have looked in CUPS and One printer is IDLE the other is Paused.? with no way of altering the state?

Finally I am also having a problem with Sorcery ie although packages are listed ie Chromium Browser when I try and Install it I get an error message telling me that there was a problem whilst comping the package. Is there any way I can install either Chromium or Firefox?

REply appreciated

In you first post you wrote "14.1". Are you sure you have the one you think you have? What is the filename of the iso you downloaded and what is the md5sum of that iso?

There is no such thing as "complete". There is "core", "basic" and "full". You have to be really specific or others can only guess. For example, you say you did a 14.0.1 "complete" installation. If that means "full", then your problem about simple-scan makes absolutely no sense, since it is comes installed with a 14.0.1 full mode installation.
