DVD and Video applications

Post by jpg153 »

Hi all,

I wanted to:
Backup some Video-DVD
Play Video-DVD
Edit video files.(I need to cut a longer video in small sequences I could then place into a presentation. I am doing training courses
for dangerous goods drivers and need to show some experiments "from tape".)

So I looked up the repo and installed:
dvd::rip
dvdbackup
devedeNG
ExMplayer
Gnome Mplayer
Handbrake
MediaInfo
Mplayer
OpenShot Video editor
VLC media player

dvd::rip did simply nothing when I clicked the button. So I removed it.
dvdbackup seems working, but I honestly don't like command line tools that much. I use them, but I like it more "ClicknColored"
devedeNG complains: child process "devede_ng.py" could no be executed.
I seem to be too stupid to get GnomeMplayer and Mplayer itself to work. Whatever I try, they are not able to show me a Video from a VideoDVD (Yoga exercises 8-) )
Handbrake did something, but I did not yet follow up.
MediaInfo is nice but...
OpenShot not yet tested.
VLC media player did what its meant to do...it played the video smoothly.

Any hint why the dvd::rip and devedeNG did/do not work?
Any suggestions to install or remove from above in order to do what I want to do?

Is Xfburn ok to backup the Video-DVDs?

Thanks for helping.
Regards Gruß

1) Xfburn is fine
2) VLC is great or smplayer
3) openshot is excellent or kdenlive (but that will pull in kde libs unless you don't mind, or already use kde)
