I'm using xfce.knome wrote:What version and desktop are you running? Try running the nvidia installation instructions after a reboot.
From the console/terminal I don't have any problems logging in as root or a user, switching between init 3 and init 4, or using the cd command. Perhaps there is something in your set-up causing a problem?

Re: Low resolution on Nvidia GT520
xfce 14 or 13.37?
You say your first step was to become root, then you logged in at the prompt.
How did you become root? Did you type Ctrl-Alt-F1? Then what did you do?
The reason I ask is because you should presumably see the darkstar login prompt *before* you log in as root by ... logging in as root at the prompt. Then type init 3 to drop to that runlevel; then cd ~oracle (or cd /home/oracle) assuming that's where you put the downloaded file.
Just to be clear, as I understand it you don't at any point want to be logging in as anything *other* than root. You need root privileges both to change runlevels and to execute the Nvidia file.

You might try ctrl-alt-F2 instead of F1; then you should immediately see the login prompt. Then (I believe) log in as root and follow the rest of the instructions.-i became root
-switched to run level 3 it said "darkstar login"
- i typed my username and login it said login filed
